Associated Press shows pro-abortion bias in factually false Elena Kagan article

Yesterday the Associated Press, commonly known as the AP, posted an article titled, “Kagan on abortion, assisted suicide in files“. In that article the author Julie Hirschfeld Davis writes:

As an aide to former President Bill Clinton, Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan helped defend her boss’ veto of a measure that would have banned late-term abortions with few exceptions, according to files handed over to Congress Friday.

And…

On the late-term abortion bill, “I support an exception that takes effect only when a woman faces real, serious health consequences,” Kagan handwrote on the draft of a letter Clinton was penning to a Catholic bishop dismayed by the veto.

What is wrong with this article?

  1. The Bill Clinton veto in question was not a veto of a ban on “late-term abortions” but rather a ban of the partial-birth abortion procedure which is never medically necessary for a mother’s health.
  2. The American public overwhelmingly opposes partial-birth abortion and using that term increases opposition in the public’s mind to abortion in general and undercuts many of the main arguments for abortion, because if the public believes that abortion is wrong in some cases then logically they have also rejected an inherent right to an abortion throughout pregnancy.
  3. The article gives the false impression that Elena Kagan is in some way mainstream on abortion by focusing on her discussion about health exceptions which are never a factor in partial-birth abortions. The reason why it is never a factor is that the only difference between a partial-birth abortion and a live birth is that the child is killed in a partial-birth abortion after being 90% delivered. In reality Kagan’s support for Clinton’s veto of a partial-birth abortion ban places her in the fringe 10% of the country that is supportive of  this most extreme abortion procedure.
  4. The AP article gives the impression that there are medical “exceptions” or reasons to perform a partial-birth abortion, which is medically false.

What is a “Partial-Birth Abortion”?

First the unborn child is mostly pulled out of the birth canal:

Then scissors are inserted into the base of child’s skull and expanded to scramble the brain:

Finally a suction catheter is  inserted into the skull and the child’s brain is removed:

You can read the testimony of an abortionist describing how to perform a partial-birth abortion here.
