Planned Parenthood Pushes Bill Forcing Mandatory Abortion Coverage on Pro-Lifers

Planned Parenthood and other abortion industry allies like NARAL are rallying behind a new Washington State bill that would require health insurance coverage for abortion if a health plan covers maternity care.

This act will force everyone, include those with pro-life values, to purchase an insurance plan that pays for elective abortion if they want an insurance plan that contains maternity coverage. Those interested in an insurance plan without abortion coverage would be banned from having their plan cover maternity care.

Pro-Life advocates gathered by the tens of thousands at the Walk for Life West Coast in San Francisco, CA held every January.

The bill is called the Reproductive Parity Act or HB 2330 and has passed the House Health Care & Wellness committee and Ways & Means committee on the back of support from Democrats. The companion Senate bill SB 6185 passed the Health & Long-Term Care committee 9 days ago and now heads to the Rules committee. The full state House and Senate have yet to hold a vote.

Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest which is the political lobbying arm of Planned Parenthood of the Northwest states, “we want to make sure all insurance policies provide abortion coverage.”

Newsweek & Michelle Goldberg Distort the Truth

NewsweekToday Newsweek senior contributing writer Michelle Goldberg presented a less-than-truthful piece on Live Action’s President Lila Rose. This of course isn’t the first time I’ve seen right-to-life opponents engage in a cherry-picking exercise to distort the record of pro-life advocates nor do I expect it to be the last.

First a bit of history on Newsweek before commencing with the fact-check. Newsweek was owned since 1961 by the Washington Post which has been and continues to be outspoken in favor of abortion. As the circulation of Newsweek fell, the Washington Post sold the magazine to Sidney Harman in 2010. Sidney Harman passed away in 2011 leaving much of the publication’s ownership to his wife Jane Harman who is a former Democratic congresswoman from California. Harman strongly supported abortion while in office including opposing a ban on the termination of human fetuses that were alive and partially born. Jane Harman now sits on the Newsweek board.

Now back to Michelle Goldberg and her piece titled, “Lila Rose: The Woman Who Sparked the Planned Parenthood Flap.” The problems with this editorial curve-ball come one after another and range from slights to major omissions.

Abortion Chain CEO Says Late-Term Abortion Has No “Detrimental Effect on Society”

Ann Furedi, chief executive of the abortion chain British Pregnancy Advisory Service recently engaged with Will Saletan in a debate over the issue of late-term abortion. During her opening statements, Ann made some comments that caught my attention. She admitted that a late-term fetus connects with people because “it looks like a baby.” Of course though to Ann, it isn’t a baby nor worth of legal protection.

Ann Furedi

She further states that “there is no evidence to suggest that we need to restrict later abortions in any way.” What sort of evidence is she looking for? Does the fact that a late-term abortions painfully and violently ends the life of a human being count as evidence?

Surely Ms. Furedi knows what a late-term abortion looks like being the CEO of the largest independent British abortion chain. For those that want a real and frankly brutal education about what a later-term abortion looks like, you can see abortions on video at about the 20th weeks at http://abortioninstruments.com. (WARNING, content is very graphic.)

Furedi rightly points out that “there isn’t any profound point at which you can say there is a difference between one kind of fetus and another.” She uses this lack of difference to argue that since terminating early-term humans is fine in her view then how can later-term abortions not be an acceptable decision.

Rep. Pitts Debunks NARAL’s “Let Women Die” Claim

Protect Life Act sponsor Rep. Joe Pitts wrote in a letter to the editor at the New York Times how his legislation would protect hospitals from being forced to perform abortions. Pro-abortion activists including NARAL President Nancy Keenan have labeled Pitt’s legislation the “Let Women Die” bill because she claims that allowing hospitals to choose to not perform abortions will lead to women dying because they can’t get abortions in life threatening situations. First the need for life saving abortions is incredibly rare and alternatives like premature delivery can be used. When an unborn child is not developed enough to survive a premature delivery, that child would also not survive if their mother dies and so there is moral justification to act and save that life (the mother) which can possibility be saved.

The most direct debunking of the “let women die” label comes from Rep. Pitts directly as he writes:

The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act, or Emtala, explicitly requires doctors to provide emergency care to both a woman and her unborn child. My bill does not modify this requirement.

There you have it. The author of the bill himself outlining how existing federal law would ensure that no hospital will “let women die.” Will NARAL listen and correct themselves? I’m sure they know the truth but they would rather deceive the public through scare tactics because that builds more political support. That is quite shameful really. So much for an honest debate about conscience rights.

CNN Fails Science Class With Medically Inaccurate “Fertilized Egg” Title

Today CNN wrote and article titled, “Mississippi gov. supports amendment to declare fertilized egg a person.”

What is the problem with that?

Well there is no such thing as a fertilized human egg. Once a human egg is fertilized, it is no longer an egg but rather called a human zygote or human embryo.

According to the educational non-profit, Endowment for Human Development:

Pregnancy begins at conception with the union of a man’s sperm and a woman’s egg to form a single-cell embryo.

Planned Parenthood vs. Mayo Clinic, WebMD, and Johns Hopkins

You can’t say baby — well not according to Planned Parenthood.

The Planned Parenthood website explicitly states in response to the question “I’m pregnant. At what point in my pregnancy is it called a baby?”:

Most medical authorities, including Planned Parenthood, agree that it becomes a baby after birth when it takes its first breath.

The problem is that Planned Parenthood isn’t just taking a position that is out-of-touch with the public and leading medical authorities, they arrogantly use the false cover of saying that “most medical authorities” agree with them when they don’t. If that is the case when then why do top medical sites refer to unborn children as babies as seen below:

Mayo Clinic:

Near the end of the first trimester, you may be able to hear your baby’s heartbeat with a small device that bounces sound waves off your baby’s heart.

WebMD:

Frequent visits with your healthcare provider allow you to follow the progress of your baby’s development.

Johns Hopkins:

Additional prenatal care may be necessary if there are any preexisting medical conditions (i.e., diabetes) present in the mother and/or if complications arise while carrying the baby to term.

United States Health and Human Services:

Prenatal care can help keep you and your baby healthy.

Planned Parenthood Calls the Protect Life Act “Awful”

pampers baby

In a recent Facebook post, Planned Parenthood said:

We lost the vote on the awful (and awfully-named) bill HR 358, the “Protect Life Act” yesterday, but there were some shining moments. Check out the awesome compilation of the 18 House Democrats who spoke out against the bill. Their voices, mixed with the 6,000 calls generated by supporters like YOU made it loud and clear that the priorities in Congress are way out of line.

The Protect Life Act will do two things:

1) It will block taxpayer funds from going to pay for abortion coverage in insurance plans under the Obama health care law.

2) It will protect health care professionals from being forced to participate in abortions.

So if anyone wondered how Planned Parenthood felt about the above proposal, it is pretty clear now.

Planned Parenthood Says Law Requiring That Abortions Be Done By Doctors Will Lead to Illegal Abortions

Last month a law went into effect in Arizona that required that abortions must be done by licensed doctor’s only. Planned Parenthood who uses nurses to perform abortions was not happy with Planned Parenthood’s Flagstaff nurse practitioner Beth Otterstein telling Tucson Sentinel:

“I’m very sure we’re going to see illegal abortions crop up, which can be very serious because they can lead to deaths”

In light of this new law, Planned Parenthood has limited which of their locations do abortions because they lack enough licensed doctors to administer the abortions. Because of the lack of doctors that want to do abortions, patients are now having to travel to larger Arizona cities to find an abortionist. The Tucson Sentinel reported that:

Rep. Tom Chabin, D-Flagstaff, who voted against these measures, said he’s concerned that women facing having to travel will seek out black-market abortions.

So it sounds like the core argument against the higher medical standards is that lower medical standards will make abortion easy to access which will stop individuals from wanting to pursue illegal abortions. It is amazing how Planned Parenthood always finds reasons for opposing regulation and oversight of their abortion operation.

Note: Planned Parenthood performs 90% of Arizona abortions.

Planned Parenthood Tells Newspaper: We Perform Almost 90% of Arizona Abortions

Yesterday the Yuma Sun paper reported the following information from Planned Parenthood Arizona President Brian Howard:

Howard said 653 of the 729 abortions in September were performed by Planned Parenthood.

This means that almost 90% of preborn child termination procedures in Arizona were performed at Planned Parenthood facilities.
