As recently as three weeks ago Rick Santorum was polling in the single digits in Iowa. But last night he came within just eight votes of beating frontrunner Mitt Romney for first place in the Iowa Caucuses with 25% of the vote. To say this was an amazing upset would be an understatement.
Santorum has never shied away from promoting the cause of the unborn on the campaign trail in Iowa. He focused his speech at last year’s Values Voter Summit on his (successful) efforts to end partial-birth abortion while he was a U.S. Senator.
A CNN entrance poll shows that people who said abortion was their most important issue supported Santorum by a whopping 58%! Gov. Rick Perry came in second among these voters with 11%.
During his victory speech (he was narrowly leading the election returns at the time) he said: “What motivates me? The dignity of every human life.” He also spoke eloquently about his daughter Bella’s struggles with Trisomy 18. You can watch his entire speech here.
We can be certain that the sudden ascendency of Rick Santorum in Iowa will spook pro-abortion activists who will do everything in their power to tear down Santorum’s political chances in the coming critical weeks.
