Indiana abortion provider defunding act & Planned Parenthood

Background: The state of Indiana recently passed a bill barring state Medicaid funding from going to abortion providers. As the largest abortion chain in Indiana, Planned Parenthood would no longer receive reimbursements from the government for seeing Medicaid patients. Planned Parenthood has sued Indiana in an attempt to force Indiana to restore their government funding. The Obama administration is supporting funding Planned Parenthood and is threatening to remove billions in federal Medicaid funding from Indiana if they do not start funding Planned Parenthood again.

Fact: Planned Parenthood claims 9,300 Medicaid patients statewide

Source: “Our 9,300 Medicaid patients … are going to see their care disrupted,” said Betty Cockrum, president of Planned Parenthood of Indiana.

Fact: Less than 1% of Indiana Medicaid Patients go to Planned Parenthood

Source:  Indiana had Medicaid enrollment of 1,022,700 as of 2007. Planned Parenthood claims 9,300 Medicaid patients or 0.91% of all Indiana Medicaid recipients.

Fact: Planned Parenthood does over half of all abortions in Indiana

Source: Indiana Planned Parenthood’s latest annual report which shows that they did 5,580 termination procedures. Latest Indiana statistics show 10,680 abortions performed annually statewide by all providers. This means 52% of all Indiana abortions are performed at Planned Parenthood.

Fact: Planned Parenthood has 28 clinics in Indiana
