Shocking Stat: Number of Abortions Exceed All Other Deaths Combined in NYC

New York City, the home of abortion industry giant Planned Parenthood, is the abortion capitol of the United States. According to the New York City Summary of Vital Statistics, 41% of unborn children in that city have their lives end in abortion. The latest look at the numbers comes from data discoved by the Catholic Key blog. Let’s take a look…

In 2008, according to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, there were 55,391 official deaths in New York City.

Also in 2008, according to the New York State Department of Health, there were 82,475 killed by induced abortions in New York City.

New York City - Chart of DeathsI think it is fair to say, that this is true…

The Most Dangerous Place

UPDATE 7:51 PM EST, 3/12/2011:

As commenter “charleyme2″ as pointed out, the data for abortions came from 2008 and the data for deaths came from 2006 (but was reported in 2008). The correct comparison should be between abortions in 2008 and deaths in 2008. Based on that comparison, there we 54, 193 deaths from causes other than abortion instead of 55,391 which is the 2006 number. This minor change actually makes the ratio of abortion deaths to deaths from other causes higher.

Maybe the most dangerous place in New York and other parts of the United States, but "the whole world?" I don't know, I agree abortion is very wrong but I'd say it's more dangerous to be a child living in parts of Africa where AIDS and rape runs rampant, and the risk of starvation and other diseases is incredibly high.

But anyways I agree that this statistic is very startling, and something should definitely be done to reduce those numbers.

    • livewell8

Well about 20-25% of unborn children will die in their 9 months in the womb. I doubt there are many places, even in Africa where 20-25% of the population die over a 9 month period. The statistics that I have seen show the situation is bad there but not close to such a high rate.

      • Adrrya

It's surprising, but actually about one half of all child deaths (under 5) around the world occur in Africa. At least two thirds of these deaths are preventable too. In addition, all of the countries where at least 10 percent of children under five died were in Africa except for one (Afghanistan). This means that 30 countries in Africa have a child mortality rate of at least 10 percent; Chad is the highest with a child mortality rate of 21 percent (in 2009) in that single country alone. That is some pretty devastating information.

So a child inside it's mother's womb in NYC has slightly worse odds than a child in Chad.

          • Adrrya

In Chad there are approximately 99,000 child deaths per year (Global Health Council), compared to 82,475 abortions in New York (this site), take that as you will. By the way I am not trying to belittle the issue of abortion or anything like that at all, I am just saying that the caption in the picture is a tad off-base when there are incredibly unsafe places in other areas of the world.

          • livewell8

There are incredibly unsafe places in the world but statistically, I know of know place where over 20% of the population dies every year so the graphic is factually accurate.

The child mortality rate in Chad is 21%. 210 for every 1,000 born.
(The infant mortality rate in Chad is 12%. 120 for every 1,000 born.)

In NYC there are 80k abortions vs 120k live births per year. 666 for every 1,000 born.

I checked on this and found that 5.6 million die each year from abortion in Africa (2003 estimate – http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/fb_IAW.html) and that 1.8 million deaths (worldwide) are from AIDS each year (adults and children – http://www.avert.org/worldstats.htm). Actually, if you look at that first link (Guttmacher Institute), you'll see that there are over 40 million abortions (worse than almost every known genocide) worldwide each year. There's really no "maybe" about it – the womb is the most dangerous place in the world by a frightening margin.

      • livewell8

"5.6 million die each year from abortion in Africa" is from Guttmacher. Guttmacher is very supportive of abortion. Guttmacher was founded as a division of Planned Parenthood and named after former Planned Parenthood President Alan Guttmacher. Guttmacher works for the abortion industry plain and simple. NARAL lied by over 10x about illegal abortion deaths in the US in the 1960s. I take Guttmacher 's international estimates very lightly.

        • soullibertyweb

Yes, I'd take them rather lightly as well but I'd say they're in the general ballpark. I don't know of any other halfway credible source for world abortion stats…do you?

  • charleyme2

As a fellow pro-lifer, I take extra care to make sure my facts are accurate. It's inaccurate reporting in the pro-life movement that pro-choicers will use to discredit us. You'll note from a casual perusing that the statistic noted in the article cited from the NYC Dep. of Health and Mental Hygiene (http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/pr2008/pr002-08.shtml) of 55, 391 deaths was from 2006 but reported in 2008. The actual number of deaths in 2008 was 54, 193 ( http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/downloads/pdf/vs/2008… ).

This discrepancy doesn't change the truth of your article but leaves one to question how or when other pro-life articles are inaccurately reporting statistics, and gives pro-choicers a foothold with which to discredit pro-lifers.

      charleyme2,

      Your analysis is correct.

  • ok_go

this is really shocking and appalling….

i was reading an article about this somewhere and it was showing that there were the most abortions in the areas of NY that were the poorest…. such as many areas of the bronx where there's huge sections of the population living below the poverty line. the poorest areas where also the areas with the most abortions in this article.

i feel like that's really useful information to us and we should be looking at why that's happening. is it that poor women feel like they can't afford to have a baby and so they decide to have an abortion? what can we do to change this situation (in addition to simply closing pp)? we are against forcing women to have abortions here and i am worried that women are feeling forced into abortions by poverty.

    • LiveAction_Blog

Good question. There are a few groups working to help pregnant women in NYC. Here is one of them http://emcfrontline.org

The more support that we can give them the better!
