Planned Parenthood Pushes False Stat, Doesn’t Even Look Remotely Clever Doing It

Oh, but give that big, corrupt, money-machine a cookie for trying. They posted the following graphic on their Facebook page today:

99%? That’s the dumbest thing they’ve come out with in… a week!

The Guttmacher Institute makes it pretty clear:

“Overall, 62% of the 62 million women aged 15–44 are currently using a method.”

But you don’t really need a research team to tell you that 99% is a bit of a desperate grab at maintaining your own importance. I wonder — briefly — whether they are under the delusion that spreading false info helps them?

  • Sherry

    Yes….next question.

  • Chloe Austyn Holley

as a member of this new 1%, I feel like I should go Occupy something. Adoration, perhaps?

  • Arual

Well, are they saying 99% of women use birth control, or are they referring to 99% of women who actually use birth control?

  • Da Quod Jubes

I stand with the 99 percent who favor human trafficking.

  • fern78

I stand with the women who use Natural Family Planning and get harassed by their ob/gyn when they go in for a check up. How many of those women have left their doctor’s office in tears because the doc pushes so hard for them to get on contraception. So much for choice!

“Overall, 62%….” yes this is a correct quote. However Planned Parenthood could be referring to this quote: “Virtually all women (more than 99%) aged 15–44 who have ever had sexual intercourse have used at least one contraceptive method.”

Then they could have just said, “I stand with the 99% of women who have used birth control.”

      • 12angrymen

Well I think it really goes without saying that if you are on a methods of birth control (I understand that some women use them to regulate their period/clear acne), that you are most likely having intercourse.

Of all their false information, this is the most obviously false. I’m pretty sure that when you add together women who are past menopause, pregnant women, women who aren’t sexually active, women who have sex with women, women who have had hysterectomies, women who are unable to conceive, women who are actively trying to get pregnant, and women who don’t use birth control for personal reasons…you know, I don’t even have to finish this sentence.

“I wonder — briefly — whether they are under the delusion that spreading false info helps them?” – why not, your group does plenty of it.

Why don’t they stand with 100% of women who use birth control? Makes no sense.

After being called on it, they buried the answer deep in their comments where few people will catch it. They say:

“The study cited in that NYT piece is the same one cited by
the Guttmacher Institute. Taken verbatim from page 1 of that study: “More
than 99% of women 15–44 years of age who have ever had sexual intercourse with
a male (referred to as ‘‘sexually experienced women’’) have used at least one
contraceptive method.”" They go on to make it sound like almost every woman out there has been sexually active as well to justify the accuracy of their claim.
I think they are trying to tie into the Operation Wall Street 99% bandwagon.
This is a desperate bid on their part to make it look like they are mainstream instead of out there on the fringe. & if they have to twist the facts to do it, this wouldn’t be the 1st time. & it won’t be the ;ast.

But the sign says present tense “use” not “have ever used”  And narrowing it to women of childbearing age who have sex certainly skews it.

    hahahahahahahahahahahaha wow.. thats ridiculous!

  • Jay E.

Hmm… well maybe they mean “We stand with the 99% of those women who do use contraception”, meaning they don’t stand with 1% of the women who do use contraception.

I think you misunderstood. “I stand with the 99% of women who use birth control”, meaning out of those who do use it, I stand with them, NOT- 99% of women use birth control.

    • Sequitur

The first statement implies the second.
