Planned Parenthood’s Response: Bury Head in Sand

Since we released our new undercover video Wednesday showing counseling manipulation and medical lies, Planned Parenthood has opted to stay silent – until now. Friday afternoon they issued a convoluted statement that makes me wonder if they have no shame. Let’s begin…

Planned Parenthood: “An anti abortion organization that secretly videotapes inside health centers has made false and inflammatory claims about our services.”

It is nice to be called “anti-abortion” instead of the usual and intellectually backwards term “anti-choice”. It certainly is milder than the term “terrorist” that a Florida Planned Parenthood Director used to labeled peaceful pro-life protesters.

Planned Parenthood seems to have a hard time backing up what they say. They call our claims “false” but they don’t refute a thing we have said. Do they really expect the public to believe them when all they say is fluff? They also call our statements “inflammatory” although they don’t cite what is so outrageous. Have they never received criticism or accountability before?

Planned Parenthood: “The fact is, Planned Parenthood’s standard is to provide honest, medically accurate information. That is what the physician in this case did, in addition to accurately answering safety questions from a patient that had indicated she wanted to terminate her pregnancy.”

Planned Parenthood can talk all day about their “standards” but when they are giving this sort of counsel, nobody is going to trust a word they say.

They claim to provide “medically accurate information” although the FACTS are not on their side. In the video, they claim that the “Heart beat is when the fetus is active in the uterus – can survive – which is about 17 or 18 weeks.”

Medical science tells us that the human heart starts beating after 3 weeks and 1 day of development. From the Endowment for Human Development:

The heart begins beating 3 weeks and 1 day following fertilization.

Want more citations of this fact?

Campbell, 2004, 14; Carlson, 2004, 430; De Vries and Saunders, 1962, 96; Gardner and O’Rahilly, 1976, 583; Gilbert-Barness and Debich-Spicer, 1997, 650; Gittenger-de Groot et al., 2000, 17; van Heeswijk et al., 1990, 151; Kurjak and Chervenak, 1994, 439; Navaratnam, 1991, 147-148; O’Rahilly and Müller, 1987, 99; Wisser and Dirschedl, 1994, 108. [Carnegie Stage 10, possibly late Stage 9]

Moving on, the Planned Parenthood abortionist and nurse give conflicting statements in the video. This means that one of them is giving false information  – or maybe they both are.

Planned Parenthood nurse: “A baby is what’s born at forty weeks”

Planned Parenthood abortionist answering ‘When does it become a baby’: “When you’re like seven months pregnant or so. Six, seven months pregnant.

So what gives? Two people both confidently answer the same question with different answers and we are supposed to believe that they are both right?

If this is “accuracy” from Planned Parenthood, I can’t imagine what inaccuracy is like.

Planned Parenthood: “We cannot verify the accuracy of these edited tapes, however we can reassure the public that Planned Parenthood always provides legal and accurate information to patients from our medical personnel. All patients receive the legally mandated information about fetal development as well as medically accurate answers to questions.”

Um, didn’t we just prove that you don’t give accurate information.

Planned Parenthood: “Our priority is always high quality patient care, and for that reason we have reviewed and reinforced organizational protocol regarding answers to pregnancy-related questions with staff members at this facility.”

So Planned Parenthood feels the need to “reinforced organizational protocol regarding answers to pregnancy-related questions” yet they claim they did everything correctly in the video? That makes no sense. Either Planned Parenthood gave women false counsel and needs to be investigated, or they didn’t and they don’t need a review of protocol. They can’t have it both ways. There is a growing gap between what Planned Parenthood says and the truth, and their credibility is quickly slipping away.

Planned Parenthood has publicly stated in South Dakota that they are refusing to follow the law regarding informed consent and they are intentionally giving ILLEGAL medically inaccurate and false information to pregnant girls who come into the Sioux Falls Clinic. They are doing this in arrogance and thumbing their noses at the legislature and the law and at the 8th circuit court’s ruling against them…and no one in authority will do anything to make them comply. I hope you got SD Planned Parenthood too.

True, the staffer was inaccurate about when the heart begins to beat, but she was also inaccurate concerning the 2nd half of her statement. The staffer says, ” “Heart beat is when the fetus is active in the uterus – can survive – which is about 17 or 18 weeks.” The fetus is physically active in the uterus early in the 1st trimester. It makes no logical sense that once the fetus becomes “active” the heart “tones” becomes a heart “beat”. Further, the fetus can survive INSIDE the womb, barring accident, injury, abnormality or elective abortion, from fertilization until birth. Contrary to the information presented by the PP staffer, a fetus born at 17-18 wks is not able to survive outside the womb with our current level of technology. A fetus born at 21 wks can, with much medical intervention, survive outside the womb. I’d love to ask this staffer, since, by her own account, a fetus has a heart beat & can survive at 17 wks, does she support abortion at 17 wks & beyond?

So I use to go to planned parenthood because it was the cheapest place I could find to get my birth control but every time I stepped foot in the office I couldn’t help but think about how these people here have such different morals than me and I am giving them 60 bucks every 3 months so I called and told them I won’t be returning…and now this, so glad that I don’t go there anymore, keep it up liveaction, take these people down for what they really are…I am right behind you fighting the fight with you.

Every election year Live Action should do an exposé of all the so-called pro-lifers, who (like me) will shout from the housetops that abortion is murder, and that Planned Barrenhood is a verifiable domestic terrorist organization, and yet, and YET (UNLIKE me) knowingly, willingly freely VOTE for the candidates who VOTE to take their tax dollars and FUND Planned Parrenthood. It’s happening ALL the time (I know case histories) and it’s about time someone exposed it. I suggest you start with the clergy, all the “pro-life” priests and ministers who on election day vote FOR the pro-abortion candidates.

Thank you for having a statement such as the above and for using tactics such as hidden cameras – I was trying to decide whether or not to give money to NARAL, and you have convinced me that I must.

  9. Planned Parenthood is a feindish baby killing industry that profits by swindling money from unsuspecting and ill-informed women deceiving them into slaughtering their very own children unto the modern-day pagan fetility gods of selfishness and perversion. It should come to no surprise tht their founder was a racist, an Aldolf Hitler sympathizer, and promoted the planned genocide of blacks in america.

I agree with the points presented and think the basic arguments made here are sound, but the presentation is wanting. It’s too casual and too personalized. Too much “Oh yeah?” and too little simple refutation of claims. As you begin to draw an audience, particularly those you hope to persuade, that kind of tone will hurt you. Those who might otherwise have agreed with you will be turned off by the snark and come away with an overall negative view of your organization. Just the facts, folks, coolly and efficiently presented–that should be your goal.

Hint: this is not a mature or effective way to respond to a press release. It makes you look small and petty.

    Clint & Grace:

How then do you respond to liars and folks who place money and business before life.

Planned Parenthood may be a legal organization, but it will never be a moral organization as long as it continues to foster lies and killing.

How do you fight lies and killing. In my mind you have to shine the light of truth to the lies and death found in the clinics.

You did notice that the first line in their “news release” second paragraph was a lie:

“An anti abortion organization that secretly videotapes inside health centers has made false and inflammatory claims about our services.”

Perhaps you both have a point and since you seem to have a sincere interest in stopping abortion, perhaps you can volunteer any talents you have to assist LiveAction in improving their responses. Lacking that, I guess they will have to utilize the talents they obviously have heretofore demonstrated.

Awesome response Chuck….I couldn’t agree more.

This vidoe speaks volumes about the type of pathetic, dishonest industry that PP represents. They care only about profit and literally kill to get their money. The lies that they tell are so evedent here and I think you guys are awesome for exposing them as you do….PLEASE keep it up!! I wish that they would be completely defunded and taken down for the violent acts that they are responsible for and for calling these violent acts “procedures”.

Please…..keep it up, God bless you all.

  16. Just wanted to mention, there have been babies born at 18 weeks fetal age that have survived. Babies that young do not have a statistically valid chance of survival, but there have been those ‘one in a million’ type occurances where an 18 or 19 week old preemie have not only survived but survived to be a healthy child. The easiest accessable information on this is on the website: http://www.lifeissues.org/connector/2007/Apr07_YoungestPreemie.htm

Anyone notice that at the end of the video the LiveAction video, the abortionist says that he’s been doing abortions for **over 40 years** which is before Roe v. Wade made abortion legal!

Great Work- keep it up ! They have to hide because their past and present are full of lies. They want to eliminate the black population like the film- Maafa21 said they did and they cannot get women to abort unless they lie to them !

  19. I think maybe we should be calling ourselves abolitionists, since this is much like the struggle to free slaves- who also weren’t considered human beings, at the time. Great Christian leaders of our day should be identified with Abraham Lincoln ( the 1st Republican pres.), who laced his speeches with Bible quotes. All the time, we need to remind people this isn’t just a religious issue, but a Democratic and moral one- science agreeing that life begins at conception.

If PP gave accurate information about fetal development, there would be far fewer abortions and their business would suffer. Just goes to show what a sick world we live in.

I’d love to see an exposé done on the supposed prenatal care they offer, I was only able to locate one branch in the southeast that claimed to provide it, and it was in a comparatively small town. I know they have to say they offer it to avoid a lawsuit. I’m 14 weeks pregnant and would love to go into that branch and see what kind of “prenatal care” they really give….

I am also shocked at how they treat women who turn to them for help. I called my local PP out of curiosity after watching the Mona Lisa Project videos and when I FINALLY got a real person on the phone, she just rattled off a list of the services they DON’T offer at that branch, and shushed me when I tried to ask a question.
