POEM: What Could Have Been?

by Timothy Jarmon

Tiny little fingers
and tiny little toes
What she could have been
only heaven knows

Growing in the safety
of her hiding place
A beautiful little head
and a precious little face

Yawning and stretching
and kicking around
Moving and responding
to her mother’s sound

A future chemist
or an astronaut in space
Someone to cure cancer
for the human race

A wonderful mind
that could have found
answers to the questions
that have kept us bound

A precious life
so quickly is gone
And now we’re reaping
the death we’ve sown

To take her life
is a horrible sin
And it’s sad to think
What could have been?

    Beautiful poem!

As followers of Jesus Christ and His teachings, we are called to defend the weak and the helpless. "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves…defend the rights of the poor and needy." Proverbs 31:8-9

Here is a Letter from Father Paul to Timothy Jarmon (I am using poetic and biblical license.),

Thank you for your inspiring poem! Please submit it to the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (N.C.C.B.) for publication in the U.S. Our Lord says in Isaiah 49:15, "Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you." Also, isn't it ironic that if abortion is a "pro-woman right issue" that, according to statistics, more girl babies end-up being aborted than boy babies?!

To be "pro-life" is not a one issue stand. As Christians – I, myself, being a Roman Catholic priest – we are not just "pro-life". To be "pro-life" means to be "pro-family", "pro-economy", "pro-justice", "pro-mercy", "pro-American", and so on. For example, since abortion has been legalized, there are now about 40 – 50 million less workers in the U.S. workforce which means there are about 40 – 50 million less tax payers, 40 – 50 million less people paying into Social Security, and so on. The answer to overcoming our 10-year budget deficit of $ 6.2 trillion is overturning legalized abortion through prayer, fasting, and peaceful political activism.

    God bless you!

    Father Paul Grala, S.O.L.T.
