Some Top Pro-life Songs in Pop Culture

From Madonna, Common, and the Goo Goo Dolls, to the Cranberries, Shakira, and Our Lady Peace, many of our favorite bands capture and convey the truth of abortion–its pain, its taking of a life, its ultimate consequence. “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” BY FLIPSYDE
Read lyrics | Watch on YouTube

EXCERPT:

Choosing our life over your life meant your death

And you never got a chance to even open your eyes

Sometimes I wonder as a fetus if you faught for your life?…

My vision of a family was artificial and fake

So when it came time to create I made a mistake…

And from the heavens to the womb to the heavens again

From the endin’ to the endin’, never got to begin

Maybe one day we could meet face to face?

In a place without time and space

Happy birthday…

You’re still a-clingin’ to the tree of life, but soon you’ll be cut off

grow inside your momma, but you’ll never know. Oh

tiny bud, that grows in the womb, only to be

crushed before you can bloom.

Mama stop! Turn around, go back, think it over.

Now stop, turn around, go back, think it over.

Stop, turn around, go back think it over.

Oh no momma, just let it be. You’ll never regret

it, just wait and see. Think of all the great ones

who gave everything That we might have life here,

so please bear the pain

Read lyrics | Watch on YouTube

EXCERPT:

I touched my belly overwhelmed

by what I had been chosen to perform

But then an angel came one day

Told me to kneel down and pray

for unto me a man child would be born

but everybody told me to be smart

“Look at your career ” they said,

“Lauryn baby use your head.”

But instead I chose to use my heart

“TOMORROW” BY MATT KEARNEY
Read lyrics | Watch on YouTube

EXCERPT:

Because two came together so strong one night

And two wrongs don’t make one right

Giving a voice to the voiceless saying it’s choiceless’

Cause they’re priceless my princess…

I feel the kicks and the churns give me a turn

And a shot at this world to fight the fight

To beat my plight and let my light shine

In this dark time with all its ways of wearing crime

And let this world drown in these ultrasounds

Hearing this heart beats speak sweet so profound…

Les Miserables this ain’t no miserable daughter

Calling you Cossette ’cause God will be your father

Black Balloon is actually about drug abuse. (www.songfacts.com) All the others appear to be about abortion, though.

  • Jocelyn

The Ben Fold's Five song "Brick". On the album Ben Folds Live, Folds explained: "People ask me what this song's about… I was asked about it a lot, and I didn't really wanna make a big hairy deal out of it, because I just wanted the song to speak for itself. But the song is about when I was in high school, me and my girlfriend had to get an abortion, and it was a very sad thing. And, I didn't really want to write this song from any kind of political standpoint, or make a statement. I just wanted to reflect what it feels like. So, anyone who's gone through that before, then you'll know what the song's about."

  • Jocelyn

Nick Cannon's "Can I Live?" "I will always be a part of you. Trust your soul know his heart is true. If I could talk I would say to you. Can I live? Can I live?"

  • Jocelyn

Last one that I can think of off the top of my head – Disarm by The Smashing Pumpkins. This one is kinda up in the air though. It seems to be clearly pro life, but when there was controversy over it, Billy Corgan denied it was about abortion at all. But I suppose art is what you take away from it and I've always heard a pro life message in the song, even before I was pro life.

  • Vita

Madonna's song might appear inspirational, but the problem is she herself admitted having multiple abortions for the sake of her career. Sounds kind of hypocritical.

  • http://motherofthechurch.blogspot.com Patrick

One pro-life song that's not mentioned here is Colbie Caillat's "Capri." It's a very beautiful song, and very pro-life.

  • Gary

    Mr. Wilson by King's X

"Shasta" by Vienna Teng. Here's an excerpt:

And you can't go back but you're going back

And you don't know what you'll say

    You've got half-formed sentences

Explanations for a life half-broken away

    And they just may

They'll take you in their arms and then take out their knives

    So you drive on thinking

    So far so good

But you can't go on much longer like this you know

You're all alone in this world no that's not true

The nice Christian lady told you so

She was handing out pamphlets by the clinic door

Saying "Jesus knows what you've been through

Take the Savior into your heart my child

There's love waiting for the both of you"

Well you don't believe but you have to believe

It's still crumpled there in your back seat

Were you the hero or the worst kind of coward back there

Putting pavement back under your feet

    Couldn't stand the heat

Couldn't stand the thought of ghosts with a negative age

    Turn the page

    OK

    So far so good

You try to sing along to the radio

But it's not your language not your song

It's from some other time ago

And you're thinking about how someone died that day

The you that was so carefully planned

But then again maybe this life is like a sleeping mountain

Waking up to shape the land

Critical Mass "Running with Eyes Closed"

  • Shiphrah

Also, Kenny Chesney's "There Goes My Life" is very pro-life. Kenny Rogers performed a song (he says it's not autobiographical) on a father's regret of abortion "Water and Bridges". http://www.theinterim.com/issues/abortion/kenny-r

  • BobL

Paul Anka's "You're Having My Baby" (1974 #1 hit–yeah, I'm dating myself) has the lyrics:

    "Didn't have to keep it

    Couldn't put you through it

You could have swept it from your life

    But you wouldn't do it

    No you wouldn't do it"

Seals & Croft paid dearly for their Album & Song 'Unborn Child' in the early 1970's – a time when the Women's Rights movement and the demand for a right to abort children was riding high. Seals & Croft had been the darlings of the pop music scene then….that is until they came out with 'Unborn Child'.

Bravo to brave artists then and now.

oh, and "Forgotten Children" by Tokio Hotel.

  • Cornelius

Check out the song "Ape Shall Never Kill Ape" by the Vandals on the album "Live Fast, Diarrhea"

"The Freshmen" has been horribly interpreted here. there's nothing about abortion or pregnancy in that song. it's about broken hearts and suicide. the "baby's breath" you wish alludes to the breath of an actual baby? it's a flower.

@Jocelyn- RE: Ben Folds – props to Ben Folds for producing Amanda Palmer's album "Who Killed Amanda Palmer" and sharing the screen with her in her video for the song "Oasis". :)

  • Nathan

Regarding Verve Pipe, here is an interview where the song writer, Brian Vandar Ark, reveals he based the song on an abortion but extrapolated to include the suicide — http://www.annecarlini.com/ex_interviews.php?id=7

Interviewer – "Speaking of “The Freshman”, did any of that song actually happen ?"

Vandar Ark – “Yeah, I mean I used a dramatic license to have the girl commit suicide when she is actually still alive and well. But, for the most part, yeah. She had the abortion and that’s about the whole story.”

    "One in a Billion Choice"

a Pro-life song, that shares the beauty of names, and God's choice of you.

  • http://www.soundclick.com/InGodsimage Brenda Williams

    “One in a Billion Choice”

a Pro-life song, that shares the beauty of names, and God’s choice of you. A song with nice lyrics, pro-abortion people called this song, a simple song about snowflakes. Well every snowflake is unique, just like every unborn baby is unique. Psalm 139. Take a listen, and download a copy, it is free, give a copy to any person you know, who is pregnant and unwed. Help them realize that unborn life is "God's Choice" and he loves them and that unborn child.

  • John Paul
