Washington, D.C. – Gov. Jerry Brown (D-CA) vetoed a bill Sunday that would have required public universities in California to offer abortion pills on campus. Senate Bill 320 would have required health centers in the University of California and California State University systems to supply RU-486 pills to students so they could carry out their own abortions in their dorm rooms. The pills can be used up to 10 weeks into a pregnancy.
In a veto message, Brown said such services are “widely available” to students at off-campus clinics. “This bill is not necessary,” the governor wrote.
Statement from Live Action President and Founder, Lila Rose:
“This is the right move by Gov. Jerry Brown. This bill was dangerous for students and their preborn children. Senate Bill 320 would have forced the state’s public universities to dispense abortion pills to students so they could induce their own abortions in their dorm rooms. California politicians and the abortion industry lied to students, telling them that the abortion pill is like a heavy period that merely flushes away a clump of undefined cells. The fact is the pill regimen slowly starves the preborn child to death and can be administered up to 10 weeks into a pregnancy when the baby has a face, arms and legs, and a beating heart. According to the FDA, at least 22 women have died after taking the RU-486 regimen and many others have had serious complications, with nearly 600 women experiencing such severe blood loss that they required transfusions. Schools should a place for education – not the ending of human life. We applaud Gov. Jerry Brown vetoing this endeavor to make California public universities into abortion centers.”
