Bombshell Report Shows Abortion Pill 22 Times More Dangerous For Mothers than Reported by the FDA  

Live Action Urges FDA to pull the Dangerous Abortion Drug that Kills Children

Washington, D.C. – Today, Live Action, one of the nation’s leading human rights organizations, responds to a shocking new report and demands that the FDA removes from the market the abortion pill drug, Mifepristone that kills children and harms mothers. 

The new report, developed by the Ethics and Public Policy Center, analyzed insurance claims data from 2017 to 2023 for almost one million chemical abortions and found that over ten percent of women experienced serious adverse events, such as sepsis, infection, and hemorrhaging within 45 days of taking the drug.

“The Ethics and Public Policy Center’s groundbreaking study exposes a devastating truth: over 10% of women suffer serious, sometimes life-threatening complications from the abortion pill mifepristone — a rate 22 times higher than the FDA’s claim of just 0.5%. The FDA must act. 

The abortion pill is not medicine. It is a lethal drug that kills an innocent child and endangers her mother. The FDA has abandoned its duty to protect women and children, fast-tracking mifepristone through lies and stripping away even the most basic safety measures.

This is not healthcare. It is reckless, it is violent, and it must end. Mifepristone should not merely be regulated — it must be pulled from the market and banned outright.

Every abortion is a human rights violation. Every life taken by this drug is an irreplaceable son or daughter. We will fight until the abortion pill is banned, abortion is abolished, and every child is protected under the law.

A chemical abortion is a non-surgical form of abortion in which the woman takes pills containing Mifepristone (RU-486) and Misoprostol (or Cytotec) to end the life of the baby. Simply stated, Mifepristone ends the baby’s life by starving it, and Misoprostol induces contractions, which dispels the child. 

Since its approval by the FDA in 2000, the abortion pill has led to the deaths of 7.5 million preborn children. It is also linked to the deaths of at least 36 women and has harmed countless others. 

Past administrations decreased regulations for Mifipristone. Today, a chemical abortion, which accounts for almost two-thirds of all U.S. abortions, requires only one telehealth visit with any healthcare provider (not a physician) and the drugs received from a mail-order pharmacy. The prescriber is not required to report any adverse events unless he or she knows that a patient has died.
