Lila Rose Responds To Biased Study Claiming
No Negative Post-Abortion Mental Effects
No Negative Post-Abortion Mental Effects
Washington, D.C.- A newly released study, published in the journal Social Science & Medicine, looks at abortion regret. The study, limited to only 667 women, claims to have found that ‘a huge majority of women who had abortions said they made the right decision.’ Lila Rose, President and Founder of Live Action, responds:
“The financial backers and authors of this study are deeply entangled with the abortion lobby and this should call into question how the study was conducted. First, as Dr. Michael New points out, ‘the study is being carried out by a team of researchers affiliated with the Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health at the University of California, San Francisco. This is a research center known for its very strong support of legal abortion. As such, the authors seem primarily interested in using their findings to discredit both informed-consent laws and limits on late-term abortions. Secondly, of the 956 women who completed the first interview, only 58 percent were interviewed five years later. It seems likely that those women who encountered personal or psychological problems would be more likely than others to drop out of the study.’
Women are incredibly complex and I’ve encountered thousands of women who have grieved the loss of their preborn child from abortion. When we consider the fact that an abortion purposefully kills a child, it is no surprise that so many mothers (and fathers) suffer in the aftermath. Abortion regret and trauma often manifest years after being buried. As can be the case with any severe trauma, many women may be in denial at first about the trauma and regret associated with abortion, and so their pain is often expressed in other ways. A federally funded, U.S.based study found a 65% higher risk of clinical depression in women who had abortions, after controlling for age, race, education, marital status, history of divorce, income, and prior psychiatric state. And according to a study listed on the National Institutes of Health website, women who abort are five times more likely to be involved in drug and alcohol abuse. It’s why a big part of Live Action’s work is encouraging those who have been hurt by abortion to know that healing is possible and to speak out against it.”
