Live Action Responds to Facebook “Investigation” Results
“Today’s ruling only confirms that the justification for banning our views is a corrupt ‘fact-checking’ system masquerading as independent when really it is the enemy of fairness and free speech.” -Lila Rose
Washington, D.C. – On August 30, 2019 Facebook notified Live Action, a leading national nonprofit with the largest online following in the pro-life movement, that two videos affirming the widely-held view of thousands of board-certified Ob-GYNSs that “abortion is not medically necessary” were marked as “false.” This was the result of a “fact-check” by two abortionists, Daniel Grossman and Robyn Schickler, who commit and profit from the procedure and have formal ties to abortion advocacy groups. Facebook also informed Live Action that the page of Live Action President, Lila Rose, and any links to liveaction.org would have “reduced distribution and other restrictions because of repeated sharing of false news.”
Users who shared the video received a notification that they had shared “false” information. Live Action and Lila Rose’s Facebook pages have over 3 million combined followers. Since Facebook’s decision to censor Live Action and Lila Rose, the American Association of Pro-Life OB-GYNS, an association of over 2,500 board-certified OB-GYNS, have condemned Facebook’s actions. A group of U.S. Senators have also issued a letter to Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg condemning Facebook’s actions against Live Action. In response, on September 11, Facebook temporarily removed the violations from the accounts and initiated an “investigation” into the fact checking process. Today, Live Action learned of the results of that investigation.
Statement from Live Action Founder and President, Lila Rose:
“Facebook has a serious problem – instead of allowing the free exchange of ideas and debate, it has made itself the ultimate authority over what ideas can and cannot be shared on the platform. Facebook disallowed the professional, medical judgement of thousands of OB-GYNs when it banned our speech.
“Today’s ruling only confirms that the justification for banning our views is a corrupt ‘fact-checking’ system masquerading as independent when really it is the enemy of fairness and free speech. Despite admitting the original fact-check relied upon the evaluation of biased abortion activists, the fact that an individual without any medical credentials was chosen as the final arbiter of which medical information can be shared is farcical.
“Live Action demands Facebook be transparent with their users, publicly admit their error and apologize to the thousands of our followers that they directly contacted, and reform their corrupt fact-checking process permanently.”
