Some people argue that there will always be women who will choose abortion, therefore, it is best to make abortion legal so it’s “safe” — but is it?
FIRST, abortion is never safe for preborn humans — it dismembers, suctions, or poisons them to death.
SECOND, even if an argument could be made that legal abortion is safer for the woman, if abortion ends an innocent human being’s life, then it isn’t ethical to legalize killing in order to make it supposedly safer for those participating in it.
THIRD, abortion, whether legal or illegal, carries the risk of negative effects to women’s health. More can be learned here. [1] In other words, some women were hurt or killed in illegal abortions and some women are hurt and killed by legal abortions, too. [2]
FOURTH, the number of women who died from illegal abortions prior to Roe v. Wade (1973) was greatly inflated by those lobbying for the legalization of abortion.
Dr. Bernard Nathanson, a co-founder of one of the largest pro-abortion groups in the nation, NARAL, admitted:
How many deaths were we talking about when abortion was illegal? In NARAL, we generally emphasized the frame of the individual case, not the mass statistics, but when we spoke of the latter it was always ‘5,000 to 10,000 deaths a year.’ I confess that I knew the figures were totally false, and I suppose the others did too if they stopped to think of it. But in the ‘morality’ of our revolution, it was a useful figure, widely accepted, so why go out of our way to correct it with honest statistics? The overriding concern was to get the laws eliminated, and anything within reason that had to be done was permissible. [3]
Other pro-abortion sources verify this, as well. In the July 1960 edition of The American Journal of Public Health, Dr. Mary Calderone, founder of SIECUS and medical director of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, wrote:
90% of illegal abortions are being done by physicians. Call them what you will, abortionists or anything else, they are still physicians, trained as such… They must do a pretty good job if the death rate is as low as it is… Abortion, whether therapeutic or illegal, is in the main no longer dangerous, because it is being done well by physicians.
She said that thirteen years before abortion became legalized throughout America in Roe v. Wade.
Most fundamentally, however, civil societies do not legalize behavior that harms innocent children, regardless of what risks may come to those who hurt children.
In conclusion, since the preborn are human, and since humans have human rights, it follows that we ought to respect the preborn and protect them from abortion.
