Former Pennsylvania Senator and current GOP Presidential contender Rick Santorum supports life. According to Personhood USA, while campaigning in Oklahoma, Santorum signed a draft version of the Oklahoma Personhood petition. While Santorum’s signature is only symbolic, due to residency requirements in Oklahoma, the GOP candidate’s support is “welcomed emphatically,” according to Personhood Oklahoma Director Dan Skerbitz.
In a press release on Wednesday, Personhood USA reported that the petition drive for the Oklahoma Personhood Amendment is currently in progress. Some 13,000 volunteers are working across the state to get just over 155,000 signatures by the end of May. If that correct number is reached, the Amendment will be on the ballot in November, giving Oklahoma voters the opportunity to put a stop to abortion and provide equal rights to preborn children.
According to Personhood USA’s press release, the Oklahoma Personhood Amendment defines “a human being for the purpose of equal protection under the law.” In the Oklahoma constitution, the word “person” would “include every human being, from the beginning of our lives, at fertilization ‘regardless of place of residence, race, gender, age, disability, health, level of function, condition of dependency, or method of reproduction.’”
Speaking at the National Presidential Pro-Life Forum that was sponsored by Personhood USA, GOP Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum noted, “When politicians say ‘I believe life begins at conception,’ that is conceding ground, and the ground that we concede is by using the terms ‘believe.’ Life beginning at conception is not a ‘belief.’ It’s not an article of faith. It’s an article of fact. It’s biological fact that, in fact, that life begins at conception.”
In Wednesday’s press release, Personhood Oklahoma Director Dan Skerbitz, noted, “Oklahomans value God’s precious gift that is the lives of our children, and we appreciate Rick Santorum’s uncompromising position on this issue.”
