President Trump gives ‘my full support’ to March for Life as politicians commit to defunding Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood, Ohio

A number of committed pro-life politicians, including Vice President Mike Pence, Congressman Chris Smith, Congresswoman Mia Love, and Senator Joni Ernst spoke with enthusiasm to the crowd gathered at the March for Life this afternoon.

Vice President Mike Pence spoke with President Trump’s full support and is the first vice president in the nation’s history to address the March for Life. He told the crowd that “life is winning again in America,” and that “a society can be judged by how we care for our most vulnerable.” He stated that President Trump will “work with the Congress to end taxpayer funding of abortion and abortion providers, and we will devote those resources to health care services for women across America.”

Elected officials who followed Pence’s speech told their own pro-life stories and described their commitment to ensuring that our nation respects all life, protects the vulnerable, stands for women, children, and families, and defunds Planned Parenthood — one of the most demonstrably corrupt taxpayer funded organizations in history.

Congresswoman Mia Love gave an impassioned speech, telling the story of a couple who chose against abortion in the midst of their difficult circumstances. At the end, she revealed that the couple was her mother and father who, at the time, had no idea that the baby girl whose life they embraced would grow up to be the first female black Republican elected to Congress.

Congresswoman Love also spoke of an image from the Women’s March last week that stuck with her. She described seeing “a young, teenage, black girl in the crowd who was holding a sign that said, ‘I Survived Roe v. Wade.’ That young women beat the odds and survived a world that far too often favors the abortion of a black girl instead of the life of a black girl.” Love continued, saying, “She is a part of what is and what is to come. I can’t wait to see what her and thousands like her become in the years to come.”

When speaking of funding for Planned Parenthood, Senator Joni Ernst said: “Folks, we’re going to stop it.” Ernst described a defunding bill she is going to introduce on Monday in the Senate. She also said, “We honor the strength of women…all women,” noting that mothers are important to our nation. Ernst said that because we honor the strength of women, we should rise “up to protect the most vulnerable in our society, the innocent babies who are unable to defend themselves.” “As a mother, as a grandmother, and as a woman,” she said, “thank you for joining me here today and standing up and marching for life!” Ernst wished “peace and love” to all Americans and that they would be “touched by the grace of God.”

Congressman Chris Smith committed to defunding Planned Parenthood and to running a bill that would protect pain-capable children from abortion. (Note: Science conclusively demonstrates that preborn children feel pain at 20 weeks, but some studies indicate that pain may be felt as early as 5.5 weeks.) He also told the crowd that the pro-life movement reached an historic turning point today.

Other speakers at the March for Life spoke of the power of the current pro-life generation to do our part to establish the right to life in our society, to care for women, and to support families. Eric Metaxas called Roe v. Wade “fake law” and called on Chief Justice John Roberts to “tear down this law.”
