Abortion advocates come up with some pretty creative reasons to support abortion. Pro-abortion men have argued that it makes it easier for them to sleep with women, consequence-free. Others have argued that abortion is necessary so women can go to college. And then there’s Gloria Steinem.
Steinem is no stranger to pro-lifers; the so-called feminist is a noted abortion activist, and has made some pretty insane defenses herself… like claiming that opposing abortion is pro-death. Now, in an interview with Refinery29, she’s arguing that climate change exists because women haven’t had enough abortions.
“People argue that climate change and other issues are also feminist issues. What do we lose by broadening the meaning of the term?” Lindsey Stanberry, Steinem’s interviewer, asked. “Are you kidding me? Listen, what causes climate deprivation is population,” she responded.
“That’s the fundamental cause of climate change. Even if the Vatican doesn’t tell us that. In addition to that, because women are the major agricultural workers in the world, and also the carriers of water and the feeders of families and so on, it’s a disproportionate burden. If we had not been systematically forcing women to have children they don’t want or can’t care for over the 500 years of patriarchy, we wouldn’t have the climate problems that we have.”
Since Roe v. Wade was passed in 1973, there have been over 58 million abortions performed in the United States alone. On a global scale, it is estimated that around 56 million are committed every single year. Yet that’s still not enough for Steinem? She thinks we need more?
Of course, this isn’t the first time she’s made such an outlandish claim, as Calvin Freiburger previously covered for Live Action News. The core of this argument is that overpopulation is destroying the planet; therefore, we need abortion… so much so that tens of millions of abortions every year worldwide isn’t enough for Steinem and people like her. But the horror scenarios painted by fearmongers in the 60s and 70s did not end up coming true… because overpopulation is a myth.
Steinem and abortion activists like her don’t actually care about “choice” when it comes to abortion. Abortion, to them, is not something that’s seen as a negative — as in, it should be legal, but it should be prevented if possible — or even neutral. No, abortion is instead seen as a force for good, something that women should be doing. Never mind that abortion always takes an innocent life and can leave women suffering emotional trauma for years afterwards. We can never have enough abortions to satisfy extremists like Gloria Steinem.
Perhaps what makes it worst of all, though, is that Steinem is still looked to as a feminist icon, despite this kind of pro-abortion extremism. This isn’t pro-choice or pro-woman. So why are we still pretending it is?
