The abortion giant Planned Parenthood will soon be adding abortion facilities on to one of its locations in San Antonio, Texas, after the closing of Whole Woman’s Health last December. This will make it the third abortion provider in the area.
Despite the Supreme Court ruling in their favor, the Texas abortion chain Whole Woman’s Health, plagued with a history of health and safety violations, closed in December due to stricter regulations, leaving Planned Parenthood to absorb their customer base. Previously, the Texas Department of State Health Services found Whole Woman’s Health of San Antonio lacked “acceptable environmental controls in cleaning and preparing instruments for sterilization,” while other locations also used dirty instruments and under trained staff.

President and CEO of Planned Parenthood South Texas, Jeffrey Hons, hailed the move as an opportunity to reach more people to commit more abortions. “We wanted to have a larger footprint and increase our service delivery capacity in this kind of central part of the city,” he said. Last year, Planned Parenthood’s Medical Center location committed 1,453 abortions, of which 74 percent were medication abortions. The San Pedro location is closer to the city center, and according to Hons, “equidistant from the greatest number of people in the city.”

Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider in the country, and president Leana Wen calls providing abortions the organization’s “core mission.” According to Planned Parenthood’s annual reports, contraceptive services declined from 34 percent in January of 2014 to 28 percent in January of 2018, but abortions increased by 3.54%. In fiscal year 2017, the corporation committed 332,757 abortions in fiscal year 2017, up by 11,373 abortions since 2016. This is the highest number of abortions that Planned Parenthood facilities have committed since 2011.
According to WOAI San Antonio, in 2014, Texas had 44 abortion centers statewide. Currently, there are 20 active abortion facilities, and in the current legislative session, Texas legislators have so far introduced over a dozen pro-life bills.
