Many abortion advocates are up-in-arms about the states that are passing abortion restrictions, and that’s led to some investigating companies that put their financial support behind those states’ efforts. An article published this week by lifehacker, shows readers, “How to Divest From the Corporations Funding Abortion Bans.” While obviously intended for those who support abortion, it’s actually also a helpful guide for pro-lifers.
The article pools together information from Judd Legum’s Popular Information newsletter and puts it in a more simplified form, but the entirety of the newsletter is available and can be searched here. In short, here are the top corporations listed that donated to pro-life candidates in key states passing pro-life legislation:
- AT&T: $196,600 total, including $113,000 to Alabama Governor Kay Ivey and $15,000 to Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant
- Eli Lilly: $66,250 total, including $30,000 to Alabama Governor Kay Ivey and $7,000 to Mississippi House Speaker Philip Gunn
- Walmart: $57,700 total, including $7,000 to Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and $10,000 to Ohio Senate President Larry Obhof
- Pfizer: $53,650 total, including $6,600 to Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and $12,700 to Ohio Governor Mike DeWine
- Coca-Cola: $40,800 total, including $10,000 to Alabama Governor Kay Ivey and $6,600 to Georgia Governor Brian Kemp
- Aetna: $26,600 total, including $6,600 to Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and $5,250 to Ohio Senate President Larry Obhof

If that’s all you need to hear to immediately boycott those companies, have at it, but if Aetna is your insurer—or Walmart is the only place to buy groceries in your area—it’s not so simple. Capitalism is supposed to bring consumers unlimited choice, but what do you do when all your choices are bad?

Of course, pro-lifers have faced this battle in reverse for years, having dealt with and even boycotted companies that have funded abortion — often through their funding of Planned Parenthood, the nation’s number one abortion profiteer.
What some pro-lifers might notice is that some of the names on lifehacker’s list have appeared on other, older lists which alleged that the corporations have funded Planned Parenthood. It is very important to note that just because a business may have once funded an organization does not necessarily mean it has continued that funding. In many cases, once people (or businesses) are fully educated about the questionable organizations to which they donate, they halt funding. This particular list was released May 20, 2019.
Pro-lifers, especially those who do business with these companies, may consider thanking these companies for supporting pro-life values and standing for the dignity of all people, even when it’s not popular.
