Hilaria Baldwin suffers second miscarriage this year: ‘We are not OK right now’

Hilaria Baldwin, wife of actor Alec Baldwin, opened up earlier this year about a painful pregnancy loss. The couple, who have four living children, were expecting their fifth baby, and shared the experience of her miscarriage on social media in an effort to battle the stigma surrounding it. A few months later, the couple got pregnant again, for the sixth time — only for Hilaria to announce this week that she tragically had another miscarriage.

Baldwin took to Instagram, posting a video of herself with her oldest child, Carmen, who comforted her as Baldwin clearly struggled to keep from crying. The couple had already announced that their newest baby would be a girl, and realized she had passed in the womb at a routine four-month appointment. “I told Carmen and took this so I could send it to Alec,” she explained. “I guess this is a good way to share it with you too. I told her that this baby isn’t going to come after all… but we will try very hard to give her a little sister another time.”

In the Instagram caption, Baldwin didn’t hold back from expressing how much this second loss has hurt them. “We are very sad to share that today we learned that our baby passed away at 4 months. We also want you to know that even though we are not ok right now, we will be,” she wrote, adding, “I’m really devastated right now… I was not expecting this when I went to my scan today. I don’t know what else to say… I’m still in shock and don’t have this all quite clear.”

In a second post, Baldwin shared a picture post-surgery. “Eyes swollen from crying, groggy from anesthesia, crampy from the surgery… but I made it and I want you to know that I’m physically ok,” she said, updating everyone about the progress of her miscarriage. “I’m grateful for my family, friends, doctors and nurses, and all of you who have held my hand through this difficult time. You have no idea how much this means to me. One foot in front of the other… now I begin the healing journey.”

Many women who experience miscarriage feel shame in addition to their heartbreak. Even though as many as 1 in 4 women experience a pregnancy loss, it’s still common for parents to remain silent. And unfortunately, the culture of abortion contributes to this stigma by dehumanizing preborn children. However, as more people speak up about the grief and heartache they feel at losing their babies, the more support there will be for women suffering.
