Democratic Attorneys General Association announces they will not support pro-life candidates

Pro-life Democrats have been made to feel increasingly unwelcome in their own party, as party officials grow more and more extreme on the subject of abortion. In the upcoming 2020 election, there are 12 attorneys general seats up for grabs around the country, and the Democratic Attorneys General Association (DAGA) has made it clear that only abortion supporters are allowed.

In a recently released statement, the DAGA will only give endorsements and support to candidates who “support the right to access abortion and publicly commit to protecting reproductive rights,” and acknowledged the requirement is the “first of its kind” for any campaign committee.

“As the battle for reproductive rights unfolds at the ballot box, in statehouses, and courtrooms across this country, there is no group of elected officials better positioned to lead the fight for our rights than state Attorneys General,” DAGA Co-Chair and Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum said in the statement. “That is why electing Democratic AGs who are committed to protecting reproductive freedom, especially for the most vulnerable communities, has never been more important.”

Any candidates who want to receive support from DAGA will need to “prove” their commitment to protecting abortion. The statement also comes ahead of the upcoming DAGA Winter Policy Conference, where Alexis McGill Johnson, Acting President and CEO of Planned Parenthood, will appear.

“We trust women. Women have the right to make their own decisions,” Sean Rankin, Executive Director of Democratic Attorneys General Association, said. “We trust Democratic AGs to defend that right and we trust this committee to elect them. Here at DAGA, we know that Democratic AGs are the backbone of the party and often move on to other offices such as Governor, U.S. Senator, and even President of the United States. This committee is doing our part to ensure these leaders are committed to protecting reproductive rights.”

Predictably, Planned Parenthood is cheering the statement. “Attorneys general are some of the most important people protecting our ability to access sexual and reproductive health care — including abortion,” McGill Johnson said. “Every party should support our right to access health care. This shouldn’t be a Democratic or a Republican value. This is fundamental.”

The abortion industry fights pro-life Democrats at every turn, even though over 20 percent of registered Democrats are pro-life. Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez once stated that supporting abortion is “non-negotiable.”
