On Monday, pro-lifers in Michigan took a step toward banning the common second-trimester abortion procedure known as dismemberment, or D&E, abortion. The Michigan Values Life coalition submitted 379,418 signatures to the Michigan Bureau of Elections in hope of bypassing the pro-choice governor.
“Our committed all-volunteer force persevered through significant obstacles that kept being put in their path this year,” Right to Life Michigan President Barbara Listing said. “We’ve received more than 400,000 signatures, but after thorough checking, we’ve whittled it down to our final total of valid signatures.”

340,047 qualified signatures are required in order to bring citizen-initiated legislation before the state government, and pro-lifers were able to secure nearly 80,000 more than that. Right to Life Michigan said it will take several weeks for the Bureau of Elections to review the signatures and confirm their validity. If the signatures are all proven valid, the legislation will be sent to the House which will have 40 days to review and vote. If the majority of the statehouse members vote in support of a ban on dismemberment abortion, it will become law. If not, it will be put on the general election ballot for a public vote. Either way, it will be veto-proof since citizen-initiated bills don’t need the governor’s signature in order to become law in Michigan. Governor Gretchen Whitmer supports abortion and promised earlier in 2019 to veto a bill that sought to ban D&E abortions.

“That’s the beauty of our state Constitution,” Genevieve Marnon, legislative director of Right to Life Michigan told The Washington Times. “If citizens initiate this legislation, she doesn’t get to veto it. It’s veto-proof.”
Dismemberment (D&E) abortion kills preborn children by ripping their limbs from their torsos, typically while they are still alive. As explained by former abortionist, Dr. Anthony Levatino in the video below, abortionists finish the procedure by crushing the child’s skull:
The bill to ban dismemberment abortions in Michigan includes an exception for when the mother’s life is in danger. However, abortion is never medically necessary to save the life of the mother. Ending the pregnancy because of a life-threatening condition can be achieved by removing the child by emergency C-section. The doctors never need to actively kill a preborn child to save a mother. Preterm delivery in an attempt to save both mother and child is not an abortion.
West Virginia and Mississippi have both successfully banned dismemberment abortion, while several states such Texas, Ohio, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Kentucky, Kansas, Arkansas, and Indiana are attempting to do so.
