New Hampshire lawmakers hold hearings on bills to protect abortion survivors

premature, born alive, Rhode Island, abortion

The New Hampshire State Senate Health and Human Services Committee will hold a public hearing today, February 4, 2020, regarding a bill to protect infants born alive after an attempted abortion. The House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on a similar bill known as HB 1675-FN last week but has yet to hold a vote.

Both the House bill and the Senate bill, SB 741-FN, would ensure that any health care provider present when a child survives an abortion would take necessary medical action to “preserve the life and health of the born alive infant.” Any health care provider who fails to do so could be found guilty of a class A felony.

The bills state that any born alive baby, including those born during an abortion, “shall be treated as a legal person under the laws of this state, with the same rights to medically appropriate and reasonable care and treatment.”

During the House committee hearing, both supporters and opponents of the born-alive protection act bills took time to testify. Committee members continuously asked those testifying if babies are known to survive abortions in the state of New Hampshire. Dr. Ellen Joyce, chair of the state chapter of the pro-abortion American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, claimed that the born-alive protection act is “dangerous” and “seeks to solve a problem that does not exist.” She’s wrong, as is anyone who makes the bold claim that babies don’t survive abortions in New Hampshire – or anywhere.

This is because it is impossible to know the whole truth about abortion complications – including abortion survivors – in New Hampshire. New Hampshire does not report abortion data, including complications, as is the case for nearly half of all states. This obviously does not mean that babies don’t survive abortions; it just means that abortionists don’t have to tell anyone when they do.

In fact, the Charlotte Lozier Institute reviewed data from the Centers for Disease Control and discovered that, “[N]ationwide, between 2003 and 2014 at least 143 babies died after being born alive during botched abortions, though the CDC also states this could be an underestimation.” With hundreds of thousands of abortions on second and third-trimester babies occurring in the United States and only about half of the states reporting complications, this number is almost certainly inaccurate. A Lozier Institute report found that in just five months in 2017, 10 babies survived abortions in Arizona alone. In Florida, four babies were known to have survived abortions in 2018, 11 in 2017, and four in 2015. That is just in two states.

Unfortunately, Americans – including politicians – know that babies can and do survive abortions thanks to the now-infamous Kermit Gosnell, who was convicted of killing babies who survived abortions in his facility. The abortion industry will stop at nothing to bury the truth because if Americans truly understand that hundreds of babies are surviving abortions, abortion businesses could no longer claim that preborn children aren’t human beings.
