This week, the Colorado House State Veterans and Military Affairs Committee rejected a bill that would require abortionists to provide care to babies who survive an attempted abortion. Colorado Politics reports that the vote was split along party lines with the Democrat majority voting to kill the bill — along with another pro-life measure — after seven hours of testimony.
“It’s not an abortion bill,” argued Rep. Shane Sandridge (R-Colorado Springs) the sponsor of a bill. “It’s a murder bill.” Likewise, Representative Shane Sandrige, a Republican representing El Paso County, told the committee, “If this bill dies today, that is saying it is okay, I hate to use the words, to finish off a baby after a failed abortion and the child is born.”
Rep. Chris Kennedy (D-Lakewood) who chairs the committee, claimed the legislation protecting abortion survivors could have an effect of “limiting access to abortion in this state,” which prompted him to reject providing legal protection for babies born alive in abortions in a state where elective abortion is legal up to birth.
Colorado House Bill 1068 as introduced “establishes a physician-patient relationship between a child born alive after or during an abortion and the physician who performed or attempted to perform the abortion.” The legislation would have required the abortionist “to exercise the same degree of professional skill, care, and diligence to preserve the life and health of the child as a reasonably diligent and conscientious physician would render to any other child born alive at the same gestational age and requires that the child born alive be immediately transferred to a hospital.” Failure to comply with the proposed legislation would have established a civil penalty of $100,000 as well as a class 3 felony and a conviction of unprofessional conduct for medical licensing purposes.
The committee also voted down House Bill 1098 which would ban abortion after 22 weeks, the modern age of viability. Pro-life activists in Colorado are attempting to collect enough signatures to put the 22-week abortion ban as a ballot initiative in the November 2020 election. The group needs 125,000 signatures before the March 4, 2020, deadline.
“Colorado’s legislative hearings on late-term abortion show just how extreme and entrenched the pro-abortion lobby has become,” Katie Glenn, an attorney with Americans United for Life, told Fox News. Late-term abortionist Warren Hern is located in Colorado. Hern has stated in the past that he sees all preborn children as “fertilized eggs.”
As Live Action News recently reported, the United States Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced that the Senate plans to vote on similar legislation protecting babies born alive in attempted abortions and banning abortions on pain-capable preborn babies following the President’s Day holiday.
