Last weekend in Argentina, a newborn baby girl was found in a plastic bag with knife wounds and a rusty knife driven into her back. According to the Metro, 31-year-old gym instructor Diego Sebastian Penayo was walking down a street when he heard a baby crying.
Penayo discovered a yet living but wounded baby girl wrapped in a plastic bag and a pink and blue blanket with a rusted knife in her back. He took her to the nearest police station.
From there, the baby girl was taken to Paediatric Hospital Dr. Fernando Barreyro, where medics discovered additional knife wounds. The medical team named her Esperanza, which means hope, and said they believe that at the time of her injuries, she was no more than a couple of days old.
Police believe that her mother gave birth at Hospital Dr. Ramon Madariaga Treble before walking down a street nearby and abandoning the baby. It is said she has been identified and arrested.
Esperanza is currently stable and doctors say she will survive since the knife did not injure any of her organs.
Abortion is mostly illegal in Argentina but the government there plans to introduce legislation to expand access to abortion in 2021. Currently, abortion is only legal in the country in cases of rape or if the mother’s life is in danger. (In truth, the intentional killing of child in the womb is actually never medically necessary.)
Argentina is said to be one of the nations with the largest amount of “femicide” — the killing of women and girls simply because they are girls. Outrage was sparked in Argentina over femicide when 14-year-old Chiara Paez was allegedly killed by her boyfriend during an argument over her pregnancy. Thousands of protestors took to the streets after her death.
“It’s a crime that discriminates,” explained Kristina Udice for elite daily. “It is not just the murder of women, but the murder of women because they are women. In many cultures and societies, this violence has long been accepted and encouraged.” Infanticide against baby girls is considered femicide.
