More than 130 healthcare professionals in Colorado have signed a letter affirming support for Proposition 115, a measure that would ban abortion in the state after 22 weeks. The proposition will appear on the state’s ballot next month.
Colorado currently has no time-limit restrictions on abortions, meaning they can be committed up to birth. Proposition 115 is an initiative to put those restrictions in place, outlawing abortions after 22 weeks except in cases of a life-threatening health emergency for the mother (although in reality, there is never a medical reason for the deliberate killing of a child in abortion). Supporters of a late-term abortion ban worked against opposition in high places to get the initiative on the ballot. Led by the group Due Date Too Late, they ran a petition campaign that successfully collected 153,204 signatures to secure a November vote on the issue.

The recent open letter was signed by more than 130 healthcare professionals and scientists in an effort to compel voters to approve the proposition. “With advances in medical science, it has become obvious that the fetus is much more than ‘just pregnancy tissue’, as some would claim. There can be no equivocation that the fetus is a living, learning and actively participating human being,” they wrote. “Every one of these lives has inherent value and dignity. They deserve to be embraced and protected by the citizens of Colorado, as equal members of our society.”
The letter writers stress the humanity of a preborn 22-week-old child. “As Healthcare professionals we are totally aware of the science of human development. The humanity of a 22-week fetus is apparent to each of us. There can be no doubt that the 22-week fetus is fully alive and fully human,” they wrote.
But preborn children are human well before 22 weeks. Science has shown that from the moment of fertilization, a living and growing human being is present — a member of the human family, because of his or her human DNA.
Thanks to advancements in technology, babies born at 21 weeks and older now have a fighting chance at life. Due Date Too Late estimates that at some hospitals, babies have a 70% survival rate starting at 22 weeks. If the mother is suffering a true medical emergency, an emergency C-section is much faster and safer than an abortion, which at this stage would take multiple days.
While many people assume that late-term abortions are rare, Colorado — where abortionist Warren Hern has a late-term abortion business — consistently reports a high volume of late-term abortions. Reports show that nearly 4,000 abortions at or after 21 weeks were committed in the state between 2003 and 2019.
