The Republican-led New Hampshire House passed two pro-life bills on Wednesday of this week. One, HB 625, known as the Fetal Life Protection Act, would ban abortion after 24 weeks unless there is a threat to the life of the mother or “a serious risk of substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily function.” The other bill, HB 233, known as the Born Alive Infant Protection Act, mandates that life-sustaining care be given to all babies after birth, including abortion survivors, under threat of criminal penalty.
The second bill was not originally scheduled for a vote until Thursday. When the majority moved to take it up one day early, pro-abortion legislators walked out in protest. Because so many legislators were absent, a two-thirds majority was required to pass the bill. With a final count of 181-49 in favor, this was easily achieved.
Kayla Montgomery, Senior Director of Public Affairs for Planned Parenthood New Hampshire Action Fund, called the Born-Alive bill “incredibly cruel” in an official statement. She alleged the bill “has real and devastating consequences to families who are grieving the loss of their child and want to be able to make personal decisions, such as religious rites and sacraments,” and that it “could force doctors to weigh whether their medically appropriate care, such as neonatal hospice, will be met with a class A felony.”

But this is just another typical case of Planned Parenthood obfuscation and doublespeak. There is nothing in the text of the bill that even hints at prohibiting families from observing religious ceremonies for their deceased children, nor does it prohibit hospice care for the dying. “This bill doesn’t prevent a parent from holding a nonviable child; this bill respects life,” said Republican Representative Jordan Ulery.
The bill criminalizes depriving a born-alive infant of nourishment with the intention of killing it. That would be cruel, but Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry frequently call evil good and good evil. Furthermore, there is a major difference between hospice care, which is intended to provide comfort until natural death, and intentional killing, which is murder. But Planned Parenthood has profited to the tune of billions off of the latter, so we should not be surprised when they object to measures designed to prevent it.
