A woman’s highly unusual story of giving birth has gone viral on TikTok. Amy Dunbar from Canada shared her labor and delivery experience to participate in a challenge from TikToker @beyondboss, asking for users to share shocking or surprising birth stories. And Dunbar’s story seems to be blowing users away.
“This one is made for me!” Dunbar began. She explained that she had been in labor for 12 hours, but the epidural hadn’t been working. “They did whatever it is that they do to make it work,” she continued. “And it finally was… about 13 hours later.” Still, with the epidural finally working, Dunbar was able to fall asleep. It’s often recommended that moms in labor and delivery rest as much as they can, as the birth process is so intense. In the meantime, the nurse continued to monitor her while she slept.
While Dunbar was sleeping, she continued to have contractions. “At some point during me being asleep the nurse who had been monitoring me the whole time turned to my mum and was like, ‘Is she asleep’. My mum was like, ‘Yeah, she is,'” Dunbar said. “The nurse was like, ‘Hey, great, there was a really big contraction and she’s sleeping, so that means the epidural is working because she didn’t feel it.”

After that large contraction, though, the nurse couldn’t find the baby’s heartbeat anymore. Expecting that the baby had just moved in Dunbar’s uterus, the nurse asked her to turn over. “Doing as I was told, I started moving the blanket and turning over and I was like, ‘there was something going on,’” she said. “My baby was in the bed. She delivered herself while I was asleep. The big contraction the nurse saw was her being born.”
In a follow-up video, Dunbar explained what happened after her surprise delivery. Dunbar’s father was in the room, and ran into the hall calling for help. “All of a sudden, so many doctors and nurses just flooded the room,” she said. “And she wasn’t crying. So of course, I’m freaking out, like, ‘Why isn’t she crying?!'”
The baby’s father hadn’t arrived at the hospital yet, and Dunbar had her baby placed on her chest, where she was encouraged to just rub her back and do some skin-to-skin contact.
“She did everything on her own terms,” Dunbar said. “The fact that they wanted her to cry, she didn’t cry. She was completely fine. But she just didn’t want to cry. She just wanted to know I was there. It was really cute, and it was scary, but it turned out okay. But it’s one interesting birth story!”
