LeRoy Carhart, the notorious late-term abortionist who has caused the deaths of at least two women and injured many more, has injured another patient.
According to Operation Rescue, on March 10, 2021, Carhart sent a woman to the hospital from his facility in Bethesda, Maryland, after botching her 21-week abortion. He had attempted to commit a dilation and evacuation (D&E) abortion on the 37-year-old woman, but something went wrong. She was taken to Holy Cross Hospital after Carhart admitted that he didn’t feel “confident,” and suspected the abortion may not have been completed.
Carhart holds no admitting privileges at Holy Cross or at any other hospital. This means if the abortion truly was incomplete, the emergency room staff would not have access to the woman’s medical records and information concerning the abortion but would possibly have been forced to finish the procedure in order to save the woman’s life.
Now 80 years old, Carhart has a disturbing track record of maiming and killing women, which he has inexplicably and inexcusably been allowed to continue.
The first patient to lose her life at Carhart’s hands was Christin Gilbert, a young woman with Down syndrome who was taken to Carhart for an abortion at 28 weeks pregnant after surviving a sexual assault. The abortion was horrifically botched, with Gilbert suffering for days with little-to-no help from Carhart or his staff. Once she was finally given emergency care and taken to the hospital, she was bleeding from every single orifice. Gilbert died at the young age of 19, and her autopsy report noted that merely giving her antibiotics could have prevented her death.
The second woman who died at Carhart’s hands was Jennifer Morbelli, a 29-year-old woman who sought a late-term abortion because of a birth defect that would cause seizures. Carhart attempted an induction abortion, and though Morbelli’s condition steadily worsened, she wasn’t referred to a hospital. Once she began having chest pains, she was taken to the hospital by her family after they repeatedly and unsuccessfully tried to reach Carhart. Emergency personnel also tried to reach Carhart, but he did not give them any information about her condition. Morbelli coded six times before she passed away, and her autopsy listed the cause of death as Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) due to an Amniotic Fluid Embolism.
Carhart has a long history of disturbing behavior, including animal abuse and allegations of unprofessional behavior, with complaints against him going back decades. He was also featured in Live Action’s 2018 Inhuman investigation, in which he was caught in an undercover video joking about how a preborn child he kills in the womb is “like putting meat in a Crock-pot, OK, it doesn’t get… broke, but it just gets softer.” He also spoke about his “abortion tool kit.”
Woman: -for some reason, I’m not able to deliver, you’ll be able to get it out–
Dr. Carhart: We’d take it out in pieces.
Woman: –in pieces.
Dr. Carhart: But that, but that at 26 weeks is very, very rare.
Woman: What do you use to break it up? Just-
Dr. Carhart: A whole bunch of, you know-
Woman: (Laughs) You’ve got a toolkit.
Dr. Carhart: A pickaxe, a drill bit, yeah (laughs).
While the reason for the increase in injuries and botched abortions isn’t clear, the facts surrounding the atrocities Carhart visits on his patients are. In 2016, he injured three women in just three weeks. In 2017, just days after his Maryland abortion facility had been re-established, he sent a patient to the hospital, with another patient injured the following month. In 2018, a woman nearly bled to death after hemorrhaging half of her blood volume due to a botched abortion from Carhart. And in 2020, Carhart injured two patients after 25-week abortions. Their injuries were so severe that a whistleblower alleged an e-mail had been sent, acknowledging the trauma suffered by hospital staff who treated these patients for their injuries. One of the patients ended up needing a hysterectomy, while the other needed a bowel resection and a colostomy bag.
Despite this horrific background, Carhart is still able to commit abortions — killing countless preborn children and maiming numerous women while somehow maintaining his medical license.
