Margaret, a post-abortive woman, told her abortion story in a 2007 BBC article, explaining that she was lied to about her baby. When she went for a second abortion years later and that child survived, she realized her first abortion had killed a baby. She now regrets her misinformed choice.
Margaret became pregnant after an affair with a married man. When he decided to get back together with his wife, she said her pregnancy “changed from being a baby to a problem.” Emotionally overwhelmed, Margaret said, “I didn’t think I could cope… I was feeling fear and panic. I was reacting to a crisis, and I had never had a crisis like that in my life. My life was out of control, and I wanted to get back to normal.”
Margaret says that at the abortion facility, “I asked if at ten weeks it was a baby, and they said, ‘No, it’s just cells.’”
A child at 10 weeks has arms, legs, fingers, and toes. He or she has detectable brain waves, is already right or left-handed, has unique fingerprints, and can already suck his or her thumb.
Margaret says that after her abortion she “became anorexic. I was promiscuous for some time. But at the time I didn’t think it had anything to do with the abortion.”
Nine years later, she got pregnant after unprotected sex with a man she didn’t know was married. She decided to have another abortion. But as the weeks went on after the abortion, her period never arrived. Ten weeks after the abortion, a doctor told her she was still pregnant.
Seeing her child on the ultrasound opened her eyes. She said:
They sent me for a scan and that is when my denial ended. When I saw that baby with its heart beating, I knew that nine years ago I had destroyed a baby.
I realised that I had been reacting out of fear and not really thinking. I was in denial: ‘It wasn’t really a baby but cells.’
Learning from that experience, she said, “Women deserve more than abortion in a crisis. There are other options, why should the death of a baby be the only answer?”
She believes that women are harmed by abortion and that some post-abortive women may disagree, but, “It may not be now, but one day, something will bring these emotions to the surface.”
If abortion workers hadn’t lied to Margaret, she may never have aborted her first baby. Her surviving child, a daughter, was 23 at the time of the BBC article’s publication, making her about 37 years of age today, in 2021.
