In a recent press release, Planned Parenthood of Greater New York offered its approval for the removal of the street sign, Margaret Sanger Square, near its notorious Manhattan location.
The founder of Planned Parenthood, Sanger was a known promoter of eugenics. While the abortion giant spent years honoring its leader, it is only recently that it has decided that it needs to break ties because of Sanger’s her racist and eugenic views — presumably because the optics don’t look good. But actions speak louder than words. While Planned Parenthood now says it wants nothing to do with Sanger’s tainted legacy, nothing can erase the fact that the abortion giant was founded with a racist agenda and continues today as it always has, endangering women and taking the lives of innocent children.
In 1939, Sanger spearheaded an initiative known as the “Negro Project,” in which she hoped to use Black physicians and ministers to promote the use of birth control within their communities. She is quoted in a letter to Clarence Gamble, saying, “We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population…” As a member of the American Eugenics Society, she also advocated for forced sterilization and population control, especially among those she deemed “unfit.”
Despite the undeniable history of its leader, Planned Parenthood has celebrated her legacy for years. Up until 2015, the organization gave out the “Margaret Sanger Award” to media, journalists, and politicians, many of whom outwardly praised Sanger. More than one Planned Parenthood facility was named after Sanger, she was recognized and honored on various websites and social media pages, and a piece written to celebrate Planned Parenthood’s 100th birthday in 2016 called her “a woman of heroic accomplishments.” In recent years, many of the web pages have been scrubbed and Planned Parenthood has quietly stopped giving the awards in Sanger’s name. While outwardly the organization has tried to distance its relationship with Sanger, its actions show that it still believes in her mission.

It’s ironic that Planned Parenthood of Greater New York lauds the removal of “Margaret Sanger Square” outside its Manhattan facility, given the history of that particular location. The facility is known for injuring women during abortions, and it does not have an elevator that is capable of handling an ambulance gurney — something that prevents injured women from getting help as quickly as possible. As of September 2021, at least 41 women had been documented with injuries at this facility. In November 2020, eyewitnesses watched employees of this facility outside clapping and cheering the results of the 2020 election, all while ignoring a Black woman who was being loaded into an ambulance from the facility, clearly in severe pain.
New York City itself has long held the unfortunate distinction of aborting more Black babies than are born there. Black and minority populations continue to be top targets for abortion providers, with the Black population accounting for 34 percent of all abortions, despite making up just 13 percent of the total population. This has been dubbed Black genocide, and while Planned Parenthood has called the notion “offensive,” respected leaders in the Black community have been sounding the alarm for decades about what has been going on within their communities. Planned Parenthood employees have also come forward with claims of systemic racism and white supremacy within the organization.
Planned Parenthood’s recent applause of the removal of Margaret Sanger’s name from a street sign is little more than lip service. Every day it continues its mission, it is continuing the eugenic and discriminatory mission of its founder.
