An abandoned baby girl has reportedly been saved by a dog in India, which is believed to have cared for the newborn baby as if the baby were one of her own puppies, according to Express.
The baby was abandoned in the Chattisgarh province of India with no clothes and her umbilical cord still attached. She was found snuggled up with a dog and her puppies about a day after she is believed to have been abandoned. The dog may have saved the baby’s life.
“It’s possibly the warmth from puppies and their mother itself who had kept this newborn alive,” said a local person. “Usually, the temperature dips at night and it’s already December. I must say, it’s her sheer luck.”
The baby was found by humans uninjured after they heard her crying. They contacted the local government, who contacted the police. The baby, who was given the name Akanksha, was taken to the hospital and examined by doctors.

“At 11 in the morning, we saw that there is a newborn baby girl who was crying and lying alongside puppies in our village,” said one of the individuals who found her when headed out to do chores. “We panicked and informed the health department before the newborn was taken to the hospital for further checkup.”
The police have opened an investigation to find her parents and figure out why the baby was abandoned. There is a high incidence of abandonment and infanticide as well as sex-selective abortion of baby girls in India, where sons are preferred over daughters.
Of the millions of children abandoned in India, it is believed that 90% are girls. It is also estimated that 13.5 million girls were killed in sex-selective abortions in India between 1987 and 2016, despite the fact that India outlawed the practice in 1994. India’s cultural preference for sons is responsible for approximately 50% of the world’s “missing female births.”
According to Right to Life UK, explanations for the desire to have sons instead of daughters include cultural attitudes that prioritize boys’ education due to the perception that they are the breadwinners, along with the now-banned practice of dowries for girls — which turned daughters into socio-economic burdens.
