President Joe Biden observed Ash Wednesday today while defending the killing of innocent children in abortion… with ashes on his forehead.
Texas Right to Life shared a video clip of Biden on the first day of Lent, an important Christian religious observance, in which he replied to a reporter’s question as to why he supports Roe v. Wade as a Catholic. Biden began to state, “I don’t want to get into a debate with you on Theology, but, ya know…” before his wife Dr. Jill Biden walked up behind him and appeared to stop him. He then changed course to say, “I’m not gonna make a judgment for other people.”
The Catholic Church is pro-life and opposes the intentional killing of preborn children at any time and for any reason. In addition to the fact that science proves every human being is a unique human being from the moment of fertilization, the Church believes each human being is created by God in His image and likeness. Every human being has intrinsic value and is worthy of the right to life.
Abortion is, for these reasons, the equivalent of murder, a mortal sin. For Biden to claim Catholicism as his faith but support abortion because he doesn’t want to “make a judgment for other people” means that, as a Catholic and as president, he is willing to turn a blind eye to the injustice, violence, and harm of abortion upon innocent children, their parents, and society. We have laws in society because we know that sometimes “making judgments” for other people (as to what actions are acceptable and which are not in a free society) is necessary to protect innocent human lives.

State of the Union
Biden’s comment on Ash Wednesday is disheartening but not surprising, as he has nearly always expressed the belief that one can be “personally pro-life” while still supporting the killing of preborn children in law. His comment echoes those he made concerning abortion during his State of the Union address on Tuesday night.
“Advancing liberty and justice,” he said, “also requires protecting the rights of women. The Constitutional right affirmed by Roe v. Wade, standing precedent for half a century, is under attack as never before. If you want to go forward not backward, you must protect access to health care, preserve a woman’s right to choose, and continue to advance maternal health care for all Americans.”
However, there is no right to abortion in the Constitution, and the Supreme Court precedent of Roe v. Wade has denied the right to life for one class of human beings for 50 years; it is an erroneous decision that should be overturned. Multiple Supreme Court rulings have been overturned, including the 1857 Dred Scott v. Sandford ruling in which the Supreme Court decided 6-3 that Black people were inferior to white people. “Precedent” does not make a Supreme Court ruling ethical.
The 63 million children who have been brutally killed by abortion in the United States, and the countless mothers who have suffered from abortion trauma are the people who deserve justice. Since 1973 it has been advancements in science and medicine that have opened a window to life inside the womb. It is now known that the human heart begins to beat just 21 days after fertilization and brain wave activity begins at about six weeks.
Ending abortion will not move the United States backward, but would propel the nation forward into a place where true equality exists, where every human life regardless of income, race, age, or gender, is afforded the right to life.
