Hungary’s first-ever female president appears to be one who will continue to strengthen the country’s pro-life and pro-family policies. The newly-elected leader, 44-year-old Katalin Novák, previously served as the country’s Family Affairs Minister.
Novak, a mother of three, discussed the importance of families in her victory speech, noting, “Having children was one of the most important decisions of our lives.”
“I am ready for this task, I am all prepared. I have to represent all Hungarians. I will remain who I am,” she said. “To do this, I will not take the cross from my neck, but I will press it to my heart.”
Previously, Novak has made comments in which she established that having children is necessary for a flourishing world. “If you don’t have children, for whom do you preserve the planet for?” she said, according to The Daily Wire. “You want to preserve it because you want to give it to your children and grandchildren… you cannot argue with something like that in Hungary.”

At least one group is speaking out in support of the nation’s first female president. “Katalin Novák has been a significant champion for families and the thriving of all Hungarians,” Institute for Women President Valerie Huber said in a statement, according to The Daily Wire. “The family is the backbone of every healthy society, and is critical to the health and thriving of women, men, and children.”
“We look forward to her victory signaling Hungary’s continued commitment to the principles of the Geneva Consensus Declaration,” added Huber. “As minister, she implemented family-friendly incentives and family protections, but she also stood as a courageous woman in the defense of every Hungarian through thriving families. I am convinced she will do the same as Hungary’s first woman president!”
Hungary has taken steps in recent years to establish itself as a champion for families, initiating policies meant to protect life and encourage family growth. In 2011, the country enacted a constitution that reads, “embryonic and fetal life shall be subject to protection from the moment of conception.” Some of its pro-family policies include significant tax deductions for parents with children, three years paid parental leave, state-funded day care, and subsidized vacations. These generous policies are also said to have contributed to the drop in the number of abortions within the country. It is hopeful that with Novak’s election, the country will continue to maintain its position as a champion for life.
