Late abortion procedure botched in Denver, sending victim to the emergency room

A Denver Planned Parenthood sent a woman to the hospital after botching a late-term abortion, with the injury apparently so severe that the abortion was not able to be completed.

Operation Rescue reported that a 36-year-old woman underwent an abortion at 23 weeks pregnant at the Planned Parenthood Park Hill Health Center. According to the incident detail report, an ambulance was needed after the abortionist was unable to finish the abortion due to complications. It was not clear what complications prevented the abortion from being completed.

Currently, abortion is legal in Colorado through all nine months of pregnancy, for any reason.

Details are not known, but Operation Rescue stated that the woman likely was taken to the emergency room with the body of her preborn child still inside of her. The most common abortion procedure committed at 23 weeks is a dilation and evacuation (D&E), or dismemberment, abortion. During this procedure, the abortionist begins by dilating the woman’s cervix using laminaria sticks. After waiting for the dilation to take place (sometimes one to two days), the woman then returns to the facility, where the abortionist further dilates her cervix with a speculum, and then uses a sharp sopher clamp to dismember her preborn child’s body, limb from torso.

The procedure brings risks of various complications, as likely happened during this procedure. Women can suffer cervical or uterine lacerations or perforations, excessive bleeding or hemorrhaging, damage to other maternal organs, or death. It can also come with the risk of long-term damage to the cervix, due to the forced cervical dilation.

Operation Rescue pointed out that this is the 12th known medical emergency at this Planned Parenthood facility in 12 years.
