The Wasilla Bible Church and Alaska Heart Reach Pregnancy Care Center — both located in Wasilla, Alaska — were the targets of pro-abortion vandalism earlier this month when both were spray-painted, with glue put into their keyholes. Joyce Moropoulous, executive director of Heart Reach, told the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman that the pregnancy center was having its annual fundraiser at the church on the night of the attack.
“The person that did this we think hit the church that same night,” she said. Moropoulous noted the vandals spray-painted “Not a clinic” in black on all of the exterior walls of the building as well as the garage.
“Based on the security images, it looks to be the same person. The vandal struck the evening of the fundraiser, which happens to be our biggest event,” she added.
She also noted that this isn’t the first time she has experienced vandalism; her own personal vehicle has been vandalized in the past. “I believe it was meant to frustrate and take away attention from what we provide, which is pregnancy care and health services,” she said.
Sadly, vandalism on both pregnancy resource centers (PRCs) and churches (especially those that take a stand for life) has become more frequent since May, when the Supreme Court’s draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade was leaked.
The phrase “Not a clinic” stems from the claim that PRCs aren’t real health clinics because they don’t commit abortions. In reality, these centers often have licensed medical professionals on staff, and they sometimes offer health services like ultrasounds and other prenatal care. They offer a host of services and material help to pregnant women, including formula and baby food, diapers, clothes, furniture, supplies, and more. Data shows that PRCs have saved the lives of more than 800,000 children from abortion in the past five years.
Moropoulous told the news outlet that her center has already been able to clean up the damage and is continuing to serve women and families in need.
“We are fortunate the damage wasn’t worse,” she said. “It’s just destructive.”
