On Thursday, July 13, Oregon’s governor, Tina Kotek, “quietly signed” HB 2002, according to KOIN News.
HB 2002 eliminates parental consent requirements for abortions performed on minors and allows children of any age to obtain an abortion without parental notification. The bill also prevents Oregonian law enforcement from assisting other states in abortion-related investigations and reiterates that Medicaid and other insurance companies must provide coverage for abortions.
At the time of its passage in the Oregon House, Minority Leader Vikki Breese-Iverson said: “This is a parental rights issue and a process issue. This is Oregon effectively telling you the government understands the needs of your child better than you do.”
After the bill’s passage in the House, Republican state lawmakers staged a six-week walkout, which resulted in a minor compromise on the legislation as passed by the Senate. As initially proposed, parental consent rules would have been categorically eliminated, whereas “new compromise language would allow an abortionist to forgo notifying parents of patients under 15 if they believe it would not be in that patient’s best interest to notify the parents, but only if another medical provider agrees,” according to National Review.

Language concerning the expansion of abortion and contraception on college campuses and in rural areas was also removed as a result of the compromise.
The legal age of consent for sexual activity in the state of Oregon is 18. However, HB 2002 all but renders that law meaningless, as Oregonian minors of any age will now be able to legally end the lives of children conceived in violation of that state’s age-of-consent law, without parental involvement or notification.
HB 2002 is a gift to traffickers and child molesters. As noted by the Daily Signal, “Sexual predators are happy when their victim has an abortion without the knowledge or involvement of her mother and father. It lets them keep abusing the child undetected.”
And as previously revealed in Live Action’s undercover investigation “Aiding Abusers,” abortion facilities — including abortion industry leader Planned Parenthood — are often complicit in concealing the sexual abuse of minors.
A formal signing ceremony for HB 2002 will take place at an undisclosed future date.
