Several medical professionals at a Prague hospital are being investigated after an abortion was allegedly carried out on the “wrong” child.
According to The Standard, on March 25, a woman went to Bulovka University Hospital for what was supposed to be a routine checkup at four months pregnant. Instead, medical staff carried out a D&C abortion without the woman’s knowledge or consent. Nurses, doctors, a gynecologist, and an anesthesiologist failed to notice that this woman was not there for an abortion and put her under anesthesia meant for another woman. Both women are foreigners and a language barrier is being blamed for the incident.
Staff members who took part in the abortion have been suspended, and the hospital is investigating the situation as gross negligence. Police said they are treating the situation as a case of bodily harm.
“According to the findings so far, as a result of a serious violation of internal regulations on the part of the employees concerned, the surgical procedure was initiated on the incorrectly identified patient,” said hospital spokesperson Eva Stolejda Libigerova. “If violations of mandatory working procedures are revealed as part of the ongoing internal investigation, specific individuals will be held personally responsible for it.”
Ondřej Jakob, health ministry spokesperson, said the hospital has apologized and is ready to offer compensation to the family. However, money can’t replace a child’s life.
Abortion is legal in the Czech Republic for any reason up to 12 weeks and through 40 weeks if the baby receives a health diagnosis or to save a woman’s life. Induced abortion — the intentional and deliberate killing of a preborn child — is not medically necessary.
This is not the first time the “wrong” child has been killed by abortion. In 2011, an Australian hospital killed the “wrong” twin at 32 weeks — the “healthy” one rather than the one who had been diagnosed with a heart condition. The woman ended up aborting the second baby also, as originally planned. In 2019, a doctor committed an abortion on a woman who was six weeks pregnant when she attended an appointment for nutritional supplements. Staff members at the clinic mixed up her medical chart with that of another woman and didn’t verify who she was before committing the abortion.
The normalization of death by abortion has opened the door to a blatant disregard for life and the casual handling of induced abortion — a procedure that exists to kill innocent humans intentionally. Every abortion is tragic, wrong, and unnecessary, and it’s a discriminatory and eugenic attitude towards human life that allows abortion advocates to believe that any child is the “right” one to be killed by abortion.
