The group ‘My Voice, My Choice’ has collected the one million signatures it needed across the European Union to push for free access to abortion and force a response to that request from the EU Commission.
Nika Kovač, the campaign coordinator, said in a press release, “We managed to connect the entire EU and build a network across Europe. Most importantly, we clearly demonstrated that the right to freely decide about childbirth is a shared value across Europe.”
The group submitted a European Citizens’ Initiative demanding that the EU ensure access to abortion for all women. The one million signatures it gathered should compel the EU Commission to respond to that initiative, which was led by the 8th of March Institute, a Slovenian non-profit for gender equality.
However, creating a false right to abortion — to kill — will not create gender equality. Men and women are inherently equal, and allowing women to kill their preborn children in the name of freedom is a deadly warping of gender equality. The gender perspective in pro-abortion laws treats men and women differently, not equally. Fathers rightly can face homicide charges for causing the deaths of their children in the womb, but mothers are celebrated for doing so. Men continue to be shamed for abandoning their children, while women are called empowered for killing them. Meanwhile, men who don’t want their babies to be aborted are not allowed a say in the matter. This is not gender equality, but it is a common argument abortion advocates use to justify induced abortion — the direct and intentional killing of a preborn child — as a right under the law.

“My Voice, My Choice is a movement of friends, activists, and organizations who joined forces to make Europe a better place for all,” the group notes on its website. “We are imagining a Europe that protects equality, and demands justice and respect for fundamental rights, among them reproductive rights.”
The demands listed by My Voice, My Choice include that “everyone in the EU … be able to have access to safe abortion care, no matter who they are or where they come from.” It also demands that the EU pass legislation to “create a financial mechanism that helps Member States that voluntarily join this policy to provide safe abortion care for all those who don’t have access to it.”
In April, Parliament voted to include abortion access in the EU’s Charter of Fundamental Rights, but that vote was mostly symbolic. An enshrined right to abortion in the charter would require the backing of all 27 member states.
