Leroy Carhart botches third abortion of 2013 after Maryland Board of Physicians refused discipline

Leroy Carhart, a notorious late-term abortionist whose inhumane practices have been exposed by Live Action, butchered yet a another late-term abortion at his Maryland facility yesterday. According to Operation Rescue, at 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday a patient of the late-term abortionist was taken to a nearby emergency room for surgery after Carhart evidently botched her procedure.

This is the third woman to fall victim to Carhart’s medical incompetence just this year alone. Despite documented botched abortions, Carhart being caught on-camera saying that dead babies are “like meat in a crock pot,” and endless scrutiny from pro-woman organizations like Operation Rescue, the Maryland Board of Physicians has consistently overlooked Carhart’s inability to destroy only one life when he commits abortion. Instead, he also victimizes the mothers.

Carhart’s abortion patients receive post-op paperwork which instructs them not to call a hospital if and when complications ensue after their abortions:

We understand that this may have been a difficult decision for you, but if you follow these instructions closely, the likelihood of any long-term ill effects is quite small. If complications do develop, please call us first… hospitalization is rarely necessary to hand complications from an abortion. We can successfully manage the majority of post-abortion problems over the phone or in our clinic with no extra cost to you. However… patient cooperation with post-operative instructions is essential for a complete recovery.

No amount of “patient cooperation” with Carhart’s ludicrous written post-operative instructions could have saved Jennifer Morbelli from the effects of the embolism inflicted on her at Carhart’s hands. In fact, these instructions ultimately led to the death of the third trimester abortion patient in February, who could not reach Carhart after her botched abortion. According to Operation Rescue, who documented the case as it unfolded,

According to an autopsy report, Morbelli died from Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation “due to or as a consequence of Amniotic Fluid Embolism following Medical Termination of Pregnancy,” making it clear that the abortion was the event that led to her death. But it was Carhart’s elusive behavior after the abortion that was most troublesome.

By the time she was finally taken to the hospital, it was too late. Carhart managed to kill not only her 33-week-old unborn child, but also Jennifer herself. The predatory practices of abortionists like Carhart are the target of pro-life laws that seek to mandate that abortionists obtain hospital admitting privileges near their practice before allowing them to operate as abortionists.

Mandating admitting privileges in Maryland would prevent incidents like Jennifer Morbelli’s death at the hands of an abortionist who does not have them. And in the face of a medical board that elusively refuses to hold a physician responsible for blatant malpractice — even when it leads to death — the need for these laws is painfully clear.
