Abortion anesthetist convicted of infecting over 50 patients with Hepatitis C; formerly sentenced for possession of child pornography

An abortion anesthetist in Australia has been convicted of infecting 55 patients with Hepatitis C. James Peters, who has a history of drug abuse, pleaded guilty before Victoria’s Supreme Court.

James Latham Peters infected the women over the space of a year and a half while working at Croydon Day Surgery, a late-term abortion facility in Victoria.

He reportedly injected himself with syringes of fentanyl, an opioid, before then using those syringes to inject the women. He had been diagnosed with Hepatitis C more than a decade ago.

The Australian reports that victims “wept” as Peters responded “guilty” to each of the 55 charges of negligently causing serious injury as they were read out in court.

Peters had been arrested before – not only for abusing drugs, but also for supplying his wife with a two years’ worth of prescription painkillers. After those two cases, he was again found to be abusing drugs.

The late-term abortion clinic where he worked, Croydon Day Surgery, was aware of all of this.

Finally, in 2010, he was sentenced for possession of child pornography.

So, let’s see. An abortion clinic knowingly employed a man with repeated arrests for drug abuse who was also into child porn. One could ask how on earth he could possibly be trusted to practice medicine, but considering his employers’ own shady background, it isn’t as surprising.

The Croydon Day Surgery was set up in Melbourne in 1998 by David Grundmann and Mark Schulberg – the only two Australian doctors known to perform late-term abortions.

Schulberg himself has a tainted legal record. In 2001, he was found guilty of inappropriately prescribing painkillers. Then, in 2009, he was found guilty of unprofessional conduct for failing to gain legal consent to perform a late-term abortion on a mentally disabled woman. The abortion was organized by the woman’s father, who was later jailed for her rape.

Currently he is facing 16 allegations of overprescribing drugs to patients who were addicted to heroin.

Suddenly, it makes much more sense. There’s even, unfortunately, been a death at that facility.

While this clinic clearly is not safe for any woman to go to, the question is, why is it even allowed to remain open? It’s truly disturbing that abortion clinics continuously can flout health code and ethical medical practices yet remain open. If abortion advocates truly wish for abortion to remain safe, then why do they decry laws that would force clinics to adhere to the same standards, licensing, and regulations that virtually every other medical professional has to?

It’s been shown time and time again that abortion clinics are not inherently trustworthy or safe just because abortion is legal. Women should take note – and be sure to thoroughly research just whose hands they are putting their lives into before they walk through those doors.
