The heartbeat is the first sign sought in determining whether or not a human being is alive. It’s what emergency medical workers fight to find and restore first in their patients. Everyone alive, no matter the differences in our opinions or bank account balances, has a beating heart. Preborn children have beating hearts beginning at about 22 days after fertilization. Yet, their heartbeats are written off by abortion advocates as nothing more than a simple “pulsing.”
The truth, however, can be found in the words of abortion workers and fetal tissue procurement technicians — the very people who experience the beating hearts of aborted children on a consistent basis.
“You’re going to see this heart beating”
In her book, “Abortion at Work: Ideology and Practice in a Feminist Clinic,” Wendy Simonds shares a quote from an abortion worker whom she calls “Celia.” In the quote, Celia discusses the act of causing cardiac arrest in a preborn child before dismemberment or induction abortions:
You’re going to see the heart beating — little hearts, you know– and then, all of a sudden, you’re going to put this cardiac medicine in it to make it stop– to kill it. I won’t kill it, the doctor will kill it… It’s just a harder reality check of what we’re doing.
To cause cardiac arrest, there must first be cardiac activity — a beating heart. For abortion advocates to deny this is nothing more than manipulation.
“A heart that was beating strongly”
A nurse named Rita was required to help care for a woman who was undergoing an abortion. What she witnessed was a disturbing act of killing. Rita delivered the prostaglandin tabs that were prescribed to the woman to cause contractions. Rita recalled:
Hours later she requested a bed pan and then passed a live foetus approximately the size of the palm of my hand. It certainly was a human being. It had limbs, a head, eyes and a heart that was beating strongly and visibly. The mother saw the contents of the bed pan as did I. The image of that little baby has never left my mind.
Rita said she was completely unprepared for what she saw and tried to block the images of that child out of her mind but was unsuccessful. “[I] have visions of that poor, innocent, defenceless baby fighting for life in that bed pain, without dignity, love or concern.”
“I can see hearts that are … beating independently”
In April 2019, Perrin Larton, Procurement Manager for Planned Parenthood’s tissue procurement partner Advanced Bioscience Resources, Inc, admitted under oath to seeing aborted children with hearts still beating. She stated that “once every couple of months” a baby would fall out intact during an abortion and would then be dissected to obtain the organs and tissues that were requested by researchers.
Attorney: By not alive do you mean not moving?
Larton: Correct.
Attorney: And do you mean that they did not have a heartbeat?
Larton: It would depend.
Attorney: And when you say it would depend, what do you mean?
Larton: There are… I can see hearts that are in, not in an intact POC [product of conception/fetus/baby] that are beating independently.
If the removed hearts were still beating, they must have been beating at the conclusion of the abortion and at the start of dissection. Which means living, intact, babies are being dissected alive.

“I’m looking at this fetus, and its heart is beating”
Holly O’Donnell was a blood and tissue procurement technician for StemExpress. During the Center for Medical Progress investigation into Planned Parenthood’s fetal body part trafficking, O’Donnell shared an experience in which she witnessed the heart of an aborted baby beating. She explained:
And [the technician] just taps the heart, and it starts beating. And I’m sitting here and I’m looking at this fetus, and its heart is beating, and I don’t know what to think.
It was then that O’Donnell was instructed to harvest the brain from this baby by cutting open the face from the chin upward. Dr. Ben Van Handel, Executive Director of Novogenix Laboratories — which also harvests organs from aborted babies —corroborated this when he said, “there are times when after the procedure is done that the heart actually is still beating.”
“I see a human heart, contracting and expanding and beating, beating, beating”
Stojan Adasevic committed about 55,000 abortions before he became pro-life. One day, he committed an abortion that changed everything. He explained what happened during that dismemberment abortion:
As I pull out the mess, thinking it will be bone fragments I lay it on the cloth, I look, and I see a human heart, contracting and expanding and beating, beating, beating. I thought I would go mad. I can see that the heartbeat is slowing, ever more slowly, and more slowly still, until it finally stops completely. Nobody could’ve seen what I had seen with my very own eyes, and be more convinced than I was — I had killed a human being.
Adasevic had been taught that life did not begin until a baby cried, and said that because of that, if a child survived an abortion he was put into water before he could cry. Because the child drowned and did not cry, it was not considered murder.
“No question” babies are born alive
Abortionist Dr. Forrest Smith, who has been committing abortions for more than 50 years, shocked pro-lifers when he testified in support of the pro-life Center for Medical Progress investigators during a criminal preliminary hearing against the group.
During the hearing, he was asked to review video of a presentation by Alisa Goldberg at a 2014 Planned parenthood conference. In that video, Goldberg spoke about carrying out second-trimester induced abortions in one day instead of the typical three to four by using large doses of the drug misoprostol (the second drug in the abortion pill regimen). Smith testified that doing this would lead to a live birth with “tumultuous labor.” He said, “There’s no question in my mind that at least some of these fetuses were live births.”
If the drug digoxin was not used to stop the baby’s heart in order to procure a healthy heart for researchers, Smith said there is “no question [the baby’s] alive.” According to him, a doctor and abortionist, a beating heart signifies life even in an aborted baby.
For decades, the abortion industry has downplayed life inside the womb as nothing more than tissue or clumps of cells, but as technology continues to advance, allowing deeper insight into life inside the womb, more people learn the truth. The abortion industry knows abortion stops a beating heart, and a heartbeat is a clear sign of life. It isn’t difficult to connect the dots to see that abortion ends a human life.
