In the pro-life world, there’s a bit of a dichotomy. On the one hand, it’s a fact that with 55 million dead babies and counting (just in the U.S.), we are all responsible to do something to end the slaughter. On the other hand, it’s also a fact that there are other needy – and dying – people in this world. Trafficked women, children, and teens; domestic abuse survivors; starving children and families; children with special needs in foreign orphanages; kids in the foster care system; and malaria and AIDS victims are just a few of the groups that come to mind offhand.
So what are we to do? Clearly, some will feel more compelled than others to get involved in stopping abortion. Others will feel more compelled to adopt needy children, to rescue those sold into slavery, or to send food and aid to the hungry. All of these things must be done. And yet, that said, no one has an excuse to not do something to stop abortion.
Especially when, here in the U.S., we are the leaders of the free world, but we encourage the world to abort its children. Especially when, thanks to our current president, our nation sends funds for abortions around the world. And especially when you consider the sheer magnitude of those dead and gone and those dying every day. A genocide continues in our own nation – the innocent have their lives cruelly taken each day – so how can we stand by?
It is clear both that we need more pro-life workers and that more pro-life workers are constantly swelling our ranks. But whether you are able to pour your entire heart and soul into this movement or whether you honestly have only a few extra dollars a month or a few extra minutes a day, never wonder whether you can make a difference. Our nation will be changed heart by heart, life by life, and person by person.
Jill Stanek (visit her blog here) has written about a truly easy pro-life project that anyone can participate in. Have you ever heard of pro-life drop cards? If not, you’re about to be introduced.
A pro-life drop card is about the size of a business card – easy to carry around. All you need to do is purchase a few of these ($3 for 50 cards from Abolish Human Abortion or $5 for 100 cards from Stand True), and then pass them out wherever you go. No need to go out of your way – just put them anywhere people go.
Jill has posted photos of some great places where you can leave these cards – in picture frames, on a restaurant table, inside a movie rental case, by pregnancy tests, and in ATM and vending machines, to name just a few ideas. Library books, books for sale, and restrooms are classic ideas, of course. But get as creative as you can! As Abolish Human Abortion says:
Most people are happy to live in a world where discussion of abortion only occurs in churches and political stump speeches. Most people want to drink their coffee, eat their fast food, watch their movies, and go about their day without thinking about abortion and considering what it might take to effect its abolition. As abolitionists we know that 3,500 unborn human beings are being killed every day, and that this is not something we can just push out of our minds or keep secret. Most of the people in our world don’t know this. Many of the people who do, don’t want to talk or think about it.
Well… one of the primary jobs of an abortion abolitionist is just to get more people thinking and talking about abortion.
One commenter on Jill’s site shared another great idea, as well as some thoughts about what should motivate us as we work:
I always carry a fetal model in my purse to pull out and use….
I am not out to hurt but to stop future abortions. I love to hear testimonies of people who see a billboard and don’t go to their abortion appt.
But I love pointing out to the masses that our silence on this issue makes us complicit.
Who knows? While you’re placing these drop cards, someone might stop and talk to you. If you’re interested in being prepared with a fetal model to show the humanity of the unborn in an even greater way (and to have an awesome discussion), you can order one here. (The 11- to 12-week baby is an easy one to carry around.)
So, no matter what issues are nearest and dearest to your heart, can you take a bit of time and speak out for the millions killed every year through abortion? Can you take just a few extra moments of your time to pass out these cards? Who knows how many lives you just might save?
