An abandoned baby boy was discovered on a Colorado street in Adams County on Christmas Day, wearing only a diaper and with cocaine in his system. The baby’s parents, identified as Jarvis Sims, 42, and Christina Thurman, 33, have since been arrested.
According to Fox 31, a passerby called 911 after discovering one-month-old baby Xion in his car seat, alone on a median in a busy street in Adams County, at around 9:20 am Wednesday morning. The low temperature that day was 34 degrees. The Adams County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call, the baby was taken to a children’s hospital, and detectives began investigating the identity of the baby and his parents, even posting Facebook photos of the baby’s car seat.
Sgt. Adam Sherman told USA TODAY it seemed the baby had been abandoned for “a relatively short time of just a few minutes,” adding, “But that’s a few minutes too long for any child to be left alone in that situation.”
By 8:40 pm Christmas Day, Sims and Thurman had been arrested and charged with felony child abuse. Investigators determined Sims and Thurman had been fighting that morning and walked off in separate directions, leaving baby Xion alone. According to Fox News, Xion had been in the care of his father on Christmas morning.
Baby Xion’s other relatives, grandmother April Aragon and godmother and cousin Destiny Aguirre, expressed their grief and consternation over Xion’s abandonment in an interview with Fox News. Aguirre pointed out that she and Aragon were just 10 blocks from Sims, Thurman, and Xion when the abandonment happened.
“Hurtful, like what if he would have died? You’re going to go leave him in the middle of the street and then what? So he could die a slow death in the cold? That is not right,” Aguirre said.

Aguirre added that she and Aragon had been looking forward to celebrating Xion’s first Christmas with him, but that anticipation was shattered.
“We were so ready for this baby to have his first Christmas, the greatest Christmas… That’s what the first Christmas is, the greatest time. We didn’t even get that, it got stolen from us,” Aguirre added.
Baby Xion, who is in the care of Child Protective Services, is reportedly healthy and doing well, but his relatives are trying to bring him back to his family.
“We’re trying everything to get the baby back. He belongs with family … It’s my grandbaby’s first Christmas with a stranger,” Aragon said.
According to Fox News, Xion has three siblings who are in the care of Aragon, who is Thurman’s mother.
Fox News notes that Colorado has a Safe Haven Law, which allows parents to surrender their babies at fire stations within three days of birth without consequences.
The Safe Haven Baby Boxes organization is pushing for an expansion of Colorado’s Safe Haven Law. Founder Monica Kelsey told Fox News that Colorado should allow parents to surrender their babies anonymously with Safe Haven Baby Boxes up to 30 days after birth.
