Baby in critical condition after abandonment on San Antonio sidewalk

Police in San Antonio, Texas, are investigating after a newborn baby with its umbilical cord still attached was found abandoned on a city sidewalk at night during below-freezing temperatures.

According to a preliminary police report, the infant was found January 21 at around 3:00 a.m. on a sidewalk between Nolan and Cherry Streets. At the time, the city was experiencing an unusual snowfall, and the windchill was around 16 degrees Fahrenheit. A witness spotted the infant, who was wrapped in a towel and placed in a basket, and took him to a nearby San Antonio Police Department bike patrol substation. The child was then rushed to the hospital. Authorities say the baby was “breathing weakly” at the time, and is currently in critical condition.

Fox San Antonio spoke with Pamela Allen, who works with Eagles Flight Advocacy and Outreach, an organization that helps homeless individuals. Allen speculated that the child’s mother may have been homeless.

“You know that’s the assumption, the assumption that maybe [it was] someone who was unhoused,” she said. “We are praying that this little one will pull through.”

Allen also noted that her organization is working to bring more awareness to the state’s “Baby Moses” safe haven surrender law. The law allows a parent to surrender a child 60 days or younger to any hospital, fire station, emergency medical services (EMS) station, or a surrender box like a Safe Haven Baby Box.

According to Fox San Antonio, the area where the baby was found is very near a fire station, where the child could have been brought and legally surrendered.

“SAPD wants to remind anyone who feels they are unable to care for a newborn, they can bring the newborn to a designated safe place with no questions asked,” the San Antonio Police Department said in a statement.

Police say they have questioned two women in connection with the abandonment, but no arrests have yet been made.
