A premature baby boy who was delivered prematurely after his mother was fatally shot, has tragically died just days after he was born.
Baby boy Jesús Castrejon lived for about a week after his mother, Edith Castrejon, who was five months pregnant, was shot in the chest in her bed in the early morning hours of January 16, 2025, in Chicago. Edith was pronounced dead at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, but Jesús was delivered in hopes of saving his life. He was given about a 25% chance of survival but he sadly died seven days later on January 23 from complications of prematurity.
The tragic situation began when Edith grabbed for a “ghost gun” kept under the pillow of her husband, Robert Pasco. Pasco, who was asleep, then allegedly woke up and discharged the gun, hitting Edith in the upper chest. Pasco hid the gun in a closet before police arrived.
According to authorities, the weapon was a semi-automatic 9mm “ghost gun,” which is an unregistered weapon made with a 3D printer. Pasco is a convicted felon with “multiple prior convictions for weapons offenses.”
Also in the bedroom at the time of the shooting were the couple’s three other children, who were sleeping.
Pasco has been charged with one felony count of unlawful use of a weapon and one misdemeanor count of possessing a firearm without a valid firearm owner’s identification card. He was released from custody on January 18.
Now that his newborn son has died as a result of the shooting, Pasco may face additional charges.
According to Illinois law, “A person who unintentionally kills an unborn child without lawful justification commits involuntary manslaughter of an unborn child if his acts whether lawful or unlawful which cause the death are such as are likely to cause death or great bodily harm to some individuals, and he performs them recklessly….”
