President Joe Biden awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal Thursday to Eleanor Smeal, a lifelong abortion activist.
Smeal served as president of the National Organization for Women (NOW) from 1977 to 1982 and 1985 to 1987, and is currently the president of the Feminist Majority Foundation. According to its website, NOW “fully supports safe and legal abortion, affordable and effective birth control and other contraception, and reproductive health education for all.” The organization has fought for decades for the expansion of abortion.
According to a White House press release, the medal is awarded to citizens who “have performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens.” Smeal was one of 20 citizens who received the award. “President Biden believes these Americans are bonded by their common decency and commitment to serving others,” the White House news release stated. “The country is better because of their dedication and sacrifice.”
As NOW’s president, Smeal led the first March for Women’s Lives in 1986, a protest designed to counteract the March for Life that takes place every January in Washington, D.C. She also campaigned for the Equal Rights Amendment, which would have secured taxpayer funding of abortion while potentially making the killing of preborn human beings a constitutional “right.”

According to Catholic News Agency, Smeal, like Biden, was raised Catholic but appears to have rejected church teaching which values the sanctity of all human life, from the moment of fertilization to natural death. She has been openly critical of the Vatican and its position on abortion, human sexuality, and birth control. According to the Washington Post, she was arrested in 1987 during a protest at the Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See — the Vatican’s embassy — at which speakers criticized the Church’s teachings on abortion and birth control.
“Because of my sex, I am second-class forever in my church,” Smeal said at the time. However, men and women are inherently equal, and Roe v. Wade began an era in the U.S. in which that inherent equality continued to be ignored; an era in which women were not lifted up as they should have been, and they redistributed their mistreatment and oppression to their innocent preborn children. Roe made it so men could neglect and abandon their children, and women could then kill those children in the name of equality.
Though Smeal has been awarded for her work in justice, she has neglected to fight for the justice of the most vulnerable among us — preborn children.
