California’s Medical Standards Hit All-Time Low

“We’ll never go back,” huh?

Oh really? You just did.

One of the sayings I hear from abortion supporters is “We’ll never go back!” But with Senate Bill 623 being passed recently in California, I’d like someone to explain to me how we have not just taken a gigantic step back in time.

This bill (which I wrote about before) was passed by Democrat Governor Jerry Brown and extends a pilot project which allows non-doctors to perform aspiration abortions. Taking effect on January 1, the program will be extended, and these professionals without licenses will be allowed to perform abortions.

People say “We’ll never go back” because none of them want women going to “back-alley” places to get unsafe abortions. I agree. I don’t want women putting their lives in danger by obtaining a medical procedure from someone without a license. But that’s exactly what this bill does.

From its beginning, dozens of non-doctors were given minimal training in a  short amount of time through this program, and then performed over 8,000 abortions on patients. The complication rate of these procedures by non-doctors was consistently higher than those performed by doctors, and was reported as an 80% increase.

“We’re very disappointed that this was signed into law,” said Dana Cody of Life Legal Defense Foundation. “And based on the Workforce project that was a precursor to this and their injury rate, I would say that the pro-abortion forces in California really don’t care about women. But it’s not safe based on their own statistics, and to allow non-physicians to do abortions is putting women at risk.”

This bill was originally created with the idea of making abortion more available to women who do not live close enough to where doctors are located. Well, here’s the thing: having non-doctors perform abortions means more complications as evidenced by their own statistics. If people live in an area without access to doctors, they won’t have quick access to emergency rooms or hospitals if something goes wrong. Don’t want to go back in time? We already have.
