The number of abortion facilities in the United States continues to decline, according to a 2015 report released by Operation Rescue.

This year alone, 53 abortion centers closed their doors for good, or halted abortions. An additional 28 clinics reduced abortion services, the report finds.

In total, 81 abortion facilities closed or reduced services in 2015.

In 1991, there were a reported 2,176 surgical abortion facilities. Today, there are 517 surgical abortion clinics and 213 medication abortion clinics.

Several new abortion facilities opened this year, but according to the report, the abortion industry still suffered a net loss of nine facilities this year, and a net loss of 219 abortion clinics since 2013.

Troy Newman, president of Operation Rescue, sees this trend as a victory for pro-lifers. “There is a direct correlation between the number of abortions and the number of abortion clinics. When abortion clinics close, abortion numbers decrease and lives are saved,” said Newman.

But the downward trend in the number of abortion facilities isn’t just a recent development. The number of abortion clinics in the United States has been declining for years, with 81 percent of abortion clinics closing since 1991.

A recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that the number of induced abortions in the United States has fallen to its lowest since 1990.
