Millions of people worldwide have come together under one mantle to protect the human rights of one group of voiceless, helpless humans: preborn children. Among those dedicated to protecting them is a vast array of pro-life women. Women’s History Month is a great time to salute these amazing pro-life women as they faithfully stand for those weaker than themselves — most without fanfare or pay. Yet, each one remains devoted to this beautiful mission of life.
The women of the pro-life movement are varied in age, social status, profession, and religion. Though they are all different and may even have different philosophies on the best way to end abortion, they come together under the common belief that every human life deserves to be valued and protected. Pro-life women can be found on college campuses, on the boards of ministries and companies, in the medical community, in the legal profession, in Hollywood, and in the media. They can also be found devoting their time to caring for their families.
There is no single experience that leads women to become pro-life. Some have been victims of domestic or sexual abuse and even sex trafficking, and today they are pro-life as a result. Some experienced one or more unplanned pregnancies; some of those women chose life in their circumstances, but others did not. Some pro-life women were lied to by the abortion industry while others once worked in the abortion industry and have seen the horror and injustice of abortion firsthand.
Some pro-life women have been on the receiving end of difficult news when doctors told them that either they or their babies had a life-threatening medical condition, and they chose life anyway. Some pro-life women have been raped or abused, and some were taken to abortion facilities by abusers or family members against their will. Some pro-life women were conceived in rape but value their lives and the lives of others. Others never experienced abortion, yet they openly embrace the most vulnerable and seek justice for women who were misled by the predatory abortion industry.
You will find many dedicated pro-life women on the sidewalks of abortion facilities pleading for the lives of preborn children, spending thankless hours in the heat and cold praying for the opportunity to help a woman in crisis. These women on the sidewalks often endure abuse — physical and verbal attacks — day after day. After these attacks, they are then slandered by the pro-abortion media, who paints them as cruel harassers of women… when the truth is quite the opposite. Still, these pro-life women endure. Because of them, many babies and their mothers are spared the agony of abortion.
Beyond the sidewalks, many pro-life women volunteer their time to help women who walk through the doors of the nearly 3,000 pregnancy resource centers in the United States. In 2019, nearly 69,000 pro-life staffers and volunteers (both men and women) gave of their time to assist parents at pregnancy centers. These women and men included 47,431 non-medical personnel who volunteered their time. Many pro-life women also give financially to the work of pregnancy centers when they are not able to be physically present.
In addition, strong and visionary pro-life women have selflessly opened their own homes to vulnerable women and children to offer them hope and shelter in a time of need. Multiple pro-life women have become active in foster care and adoption to be the loving arms that will embrace each precious child possible.
These same pro-life women are also found helping their communities in many other ways, supporting the poor, sick, elderly, and abused, by giving of their own time and resources. Yet they are falsely labeled as bigots or haters and are falsely accused of not caring about human beings “after they’re born.”
The deep character of pro-life women is often seen in how they fight the lies of abortion while standing for a culture of life. They are mocked, yet resilient. They are scorned, yet kind and compassionate. They are belittled, yet they hold their heads up high knowing they are the backbone of the most important human work in modern times. Despite this, these amazing pro-life women have been utterly dismissed by the media, Hollywood, and the culture in general.
The beautiful truth about the pro-life movement is that we are all united in the cause of defending innocent preborn human beings from violence and death — a fight for human rights, in which both men and women are sorely needed. But in a time when the culture insists that “women’s rights” must include the “right to abortion,” pro-life women stand united and speak with one voice against this message which pits mothers and fathers against their own children.
Pro-life women from every walk of life, we honor you. Thank you for defending those who cannot defend themselves.
